Who Is Ready For Some Snow This Weekend?

Because I ran up a $600 electric bill by keeping the heat on 68-70 throughout the storm and dripping the faucets, thus constantly running the electric hot water heater. Plus, we cooked at home for 5 straight days, using even more electricity. DW just wasn't happy I ran up such a large bill when we could've just used blankets and hoodies and turned the heat off. And we haven't even seen our water bill yet. No telling what that will be since we dripped our faucets from Friday night through Wednesday morning.
You could have turned down the thermostat 3-5 degrees. Turning it off is a bad idea. Do you have any unheated areas (garage? Basement?) Tell her to wrap up and go sit in that area for 2-3 hours. 🤣

For those of you who are worried about high electric (or gas, or water, whatever) bills, see if your utility offers a "budget plan" (or similar). Basically, they take the total of what you paid over the last 12 months, find the average, then that's the bill every month for the next 12. Our first year finishes in April, and we'll see how we did. We're currently $147 to the "good" with three months to go. 🤞

ETA: Programmable thermostats could help also.

we use this method of payment as well-it's nice knowing we will have the identical bill every month (and when they adjust it at the end of the term they take into consideration any anticipated rate increases over the following year so no terrifying surprises come high utility months). we've also found that maintaining a temperature within our home vs turning heat/ac up to heat or cool is far less costly. I tried to explain this to my oldest but it never really 'hit home' till work from home became a reality so there was no more turning down of the thermostat during work hours/trying to cool down or warm up when home. what he thought would be an increase in utility costs at his apartment being home 24/7 resulted in a savings.

My alma mater used the "if the buses can't get up the hill (due to ice)" then classes are cancelled. If they can it doesn't matter the conditions. I swear we like never had classes canceled even when finals occurred and there was a sheet of ice on campus that almost canceled finals they still had them go. It figures that after I graduate they became a bit loosened on the canceling of classes.

Ironically winning the NCAA Basketball championship is a reason they'll cancel classes  to be fair basketball is a very very big thing there.
The university that I attended/worked at in WA state had a similar rule. Rarely were classes canceled. I attended a community college in CA that also had this policy, but it applied to most 2-wheel drive vehicles, as there was no bus service. That campus was located up a steep hill that vehicles would slide down, so snow days were appreciated. And more often than not, it was ice that closed campus. Of course this was before internet and cell phones so you didn't know campus was closed until you made the drive to campus. A drive filled with black ice roads.
Totally agree about faculty not coming in, but as staff, I would definitely be expected to come in. At least they have been making the call early, I remember when it would be made at 5:00 in the morning. I live in a rural area, and we are still iced in, I'm not even sure about school next week. My news GOAT Ron Childers said he expects travel impacts through next week. This is the wildest winter weather I have seen in a while.
I did receive an email asking if I would open the accommodated testing center on campus... nope. Campus is closed for safety.
Channel 5 is my go to news! Ron and Patrick are my go-to weather team. I haven't watched the news in a few days, but need to resume as I'm curious what is coming.

Lol. DW said that's not the point. Said it's a $600 electric bill we now have to pay. But I'll put it in the budget, cut back on something else and it'll be all good. We'll get through this.

Sure, you would have had a lower bill. For this month. Your landlord would have had a huge repair bill. When pipes break, walls & floors need to be ripped out. Water to the whole house could be disrupted. You very well could have been displaced from the house while the repairs were being done, especially if he couldn’t get them done right away. Then you would have needed money to pay for a hotel or other accommodation for who knows how long. Plus, when your lease comes up for renewal, the landlord could have raised the rent to recoup his loss. Or declined to renew your lease. Then you would have been looking for a new place to live.

Actually, I’m surprised he didn’t contact you to discuss how to deal with the extreme cold. When my daughter lived in an apartment, she would get a notice from management whenever there were extreme temps that might cause pipes to freeze. The would instruct how to deal with heat & cupboard doors etc to prevent issues. Turning the heat off is a very short sighted solution that could have cost even more than $600 down the road.

I'm included as an additional email address on my oldest's apartment for noticies-they remind people of this at least twice a month during our colder months and go into overdrive with multiple reminders (and texts) during severe cold. I think some people ignore them and they've had issues b/c a couple of years ago they made some heftier requirements on residents as far as renter's insurance coverage minimums.
