Cruise lines are removing stops in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine

There's also a good chance that the cruise ships wouldn't be allowed to legally stop there since some countries have started closing their ports to Russian ships and Russia is likely to retaliate in kind. That's what happened with airspace. Additionally, there might be sanctions imposed on companies to prevent them from doing business with Russia. And, finally, there's a safety concern for foreigners in Russia right now.

Better to play it safe and start planning for alternatives now. I'm sure that Disney can come up with something fun instead.

Something fun? St. Petersburg is by FAR the highlight of a Baltic cruise. We were so lucky to have 3 full days there on an RC cruise. No SP? I'd be canceling for sure.

DCL officially canceled the St Petersburg stop on the August 10th Northern European Cruise. They sent out an email yesterday. The email says they are working on a replacement port.

I did three days in St. Petersburg on another line in 2009. It was amazing, but I liked Helsinki better. Probably because I prefer doing things on my own than guided tours. And the fortress was amazing.

I'm on the July 30th cruise and I thought they would probably be cancelling, but I'm really bummed. I booked this cruise using FCC or I would never be able to afford it. Now I will probably have to cancel it because even with the FCC it's still an expensive cruise. I'm not going to waste my money going to some lesser places I don't really want to go or having extra days at sea. The real bummer is that if I cancel this cruise I lose that extra money because we won't be able to use it on another cruise before September.

I have a feeling they will have to heavily discount this cruise. It was way overpriced before they canceled St Petersburg. It was pricing out about 3x more than any other cruise line. We canceled our Baltic cruise twice already due to Covid.

Does Disney ever discount a cruise? I guess they offer guaranteed fares, but I've never seen normal fares go down.

Guaranteed fares are discounted fares? If they knock 30% off the price in exchange for them choosing your room I would call that a discount.

I have not seen any heavy discounts for a DCL cruise in many years now. It is a matter of supply and demand. Many people are willing to pay a high price so Disney doesn ́t need to offer deep discounts. The best you can get are the GT rates but those are with certain restrictions.

You haven't noticed all the Guaranteed rates over the last 9 months. Those willing to cruise are getting some great deals. I'm not really sure what you mean about restrictions other than not choosing your room. What exactly are you restricted from doing.

What exactly are you restricted from doing.

*GT rates are non-refundable and full payment due at time of booking. So you're restricted from paying only deposit or from cancelling.

St Petersburg is a great stop, but seeing as it is Putin’s birthplace, it would absolutely send the wrong message to continue to send ships in there.

Generally they are only offered within the cancellation penalty period and after the PIF date anyway. So really no difference in when you have to pay the whole amount. Now with Covid and PIF dates being extended that period is shorter. These aren’t normal times obviously.
Many cruise lines have gone to non- refundable deposits to get a discounted rate. That is something I’d never do far in advance. I’m much more comfortable booking a couple months out if I’m going to do anything non- refundable. I rented non- refundable points at WDW this go around. It’s kind of scary, but I did save 50% off the room rate. The lack of WDW discounts drove me to do it.

I guess we should never visit a city that’s a birth place to a leader we don’t approve of or that committed war crimes? We’re going to eliminate a lot of great historical cities if we do that. I’m not sure the corporate virtual signaling is going to accomplish much.

Or, we could be reasonable and just accept that Russia isn't a safe place right now and that we shouldn't be supporting their illegal war in Ukraine.

The way things are going no place is going to be safe. I didn't know wars were classified as legal or illegal. It's all bad.

It’s all about the dates.

Surprisingly, they are! There are numerous treaties and conventions that establish when it's legal to declare war, what sorts of actions are legal during war, and so on. But, you're right: it's all bad.

We shouldn't keep derailing the thread, though. Back to cruising!

Um OK, I guess that justifies it. One thing your right about is we better get back to cruising.
