Cruise Curmudgeons of the World Unite

Statler and Waldorf are Disney characters? I guess so, aren't they now?

Although Mrs. Tex might prefer Madam.

Disney acquired the rights to the Muppets in 2004 and they bought Marvel recently. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go after Harry Potter in the near future...

Cruise Curmudgeron Ian - there's a thread on the DCL board just ripe for you to add your opinion ..... "Art of the Theme Ship Tour". The poster is asking about the tour on the Dream, but your opinions
from experience on the Magic/Wonder would certainly give readers a post to remember.

Ding! Ding! Ding! After an absence of about 50 days, "Tell me about ..." threads have now been sighted on the cruise boards again.

Do you think it's time for me to post?

- Tell me about the ocean
- Tell me about fish
- Tell me about Newtonian laws
- Tell me about toilets

Actually, people should be warned about the toilets! :lmao:

Well, I'm back from my first Disney cruise and I have to admit I've lost some of my curmudgeoness... :)

According to the Cruise Staff, there were 900 children on our cruise. I'd sure like to know where they put them, because I didn't see them. There were some in the Mickey Pool and they came out whenever there was a character event in the atrium, but for the most part they were very unobtrusive. Our stateroom was very close to the Edge Club for tweens, but we didn't hear any noise from it at all.

All in all, the experience was very positive.

Careful, such a positive report might cost you your status as a cruise curmudgeon.

I'm next! Will be on the Magic this Saturday. Will hope I can one up GrumpyGoat!

Any suggestions from my curmudgeon friends?

A milestone in the annals of curmudgeonry occurred today. The Curmudgeon God; the person that all curmudgeons aspire to be, has retired. Andy Rooney made his last regular appearance on 60 Minutes tonight... :sad1: :sad1:

He was the personification of curmudgeonry.

Apparently, I'm not the only one that feels this way about cruises on the Wonder. The below article appeared in the October issue of Westways, the magazine of the AAA for the western United States.

I love the title... :)

I have not yet read this entire thread, but I LOVE it!

I, also, love the Disney cruises, but totally agree that there are many, many cringe-inducing elements about it.

I loathe the cheerleading cast members. That much perkiness must addle the brain. I also despise being spoken to like I'm a rather dimwitted 2 year old.

At the last pirate party insanity descended om me and I queued for cake. It took forever to wind my way to the table, and they were out of forks. I asked the cast member for a fork and she made a hand gesture to me that I should eat the cake with my hands. I wanted to make a finger gesture back at her but opted to just snarl politely.

I finally found a fork and went up to deck 10, where promptly a strong gust of wind came and blew my piece of cake off my plate and over the railing. It would have been poetic justice had the wind-launched cake hit the fork gesturing cast member in the face. I would have then considered the evening a great success.

This story had me :rotfl:

I totally do not get the whole hoopla around the pirate party, but I ESPECIALLY don't get the pirate party on the Alaska cruises.

We are in ALASKA, for crying out loud!!!
I don't think pirates have anything to do with Alaska? :confused3

I agree completely about the sail away party. It is cheesy. I like the act of sailing away but the party is much ado about nothing. Other than an opportunity for the cast members to whip themselves up into a Splenda induced frenzy.

Again, like the pirate party, I just don't see the whole "DON'T MISS the Sail-Away/Pirate Party!!!!

Yes, it is fun to watch the pier moving away, and realize that the cruise has officially begun.

But I am not getting on that way-too-crowded deck and make a fool of myself with silly line dances . . . :sad2:

There is another thing that annoys me (what just one?), and I really am probably alone in this ... It's the big mural of Walt Disney leaning on the piano where they altered it to remove the cigarette he was smoking.

For pity's sake the man smoked and drank whiskey!

I know why they did it, but they should have just selected another photo from the 10 billion of him and not tried to alter history because it was not politically correct.Every time I see it it sends chills down my spine. I can't help thinking of the photos that Stalin had Trotsky airbrushed out of.

Yup. He was a chain-smoker, and died way too young from lung cancer. A fact that Disney (the corporation) really tries to sugar coat.

I know other people have commented on the pillow case thing too. I totally don't understand that. Why the big deal about pillow cases, of all things, with fake Disney character "autographs"?

Here's some of my curmudgeonry:

Parents who drink way too much while with their kids.
On our previous Western Carribean cruise, we went to see "Lilo and Stitch" at the Buena Vista Theater, in the evening after our Castaway Cay day.

We get our seats, and just before the movie starts, a dad who had had a few too many Conch Coolers sat RIGHT NEXT TO ME. In a row with dozens of empty seats. He had a 5 -6 year old son with him.

When the movie starts, dad promptly fell asleep. Which was OK, until he started to snore. Loudly.

He slept through the entire movie. Except for the end.

He woke up just in time to "sing" Burnin' Love.
Let me just say that he was no Elvis. :rolleyes1

Guess what. The article link will not work for me :confused3

They keep redirecting me to the AAA for my state. Finally googled and loaded the cached page. Much better.
:goodvibes
That was almost enough to make me go all curmudgeony and post the original link to the main DCL boards just to get all the "the link is broken" notes back.
:lmao:

I agree that Disney has taken the Pirate franchise way too far. They are going to milk Capn Jack Sparrow for all he's worth. Hopefully Johnny Depp will throw in the towel and refuse to make any more of the movies...

Regarding the parties, keep in mind this is a Disney cruise. This stuff is aimed more at the kids than the adults. If you want less parties, there are other cruise lines... ;)

The pillow cases are probably aimed at the kids also. What child wouldn't want to sleep on a pillow with all the character's autographs on it?

Gah! Now I know I've lost some of my curmudgeonness... I'm defending Disney to another curmudgeon...

With the Sail Away and Pirate parties, I think I had bought into the hype on these boards and so the real events were a let down. I'm not sure what I was expecting but the reality of them was a bit let down.

Four our upcoming cruise I book Palo pirate party.
