Cruise companies starting to require vaccinations

Our cruise is set to sail November 2021. I don't know when my part of Illinois will have the vaccine available to the general public. Both of my daughters are nurses and have received the vaccine. I hope I can get the vaccine in time if the cruise sails, or I will be saying goodbye (and crying the ugly cry) to them at the airport.

Only issue I see is me and my family not having an opportunity to get a vaccine before our cruise. Or how they deal with kids as for now the vaccine is not approved for them. or what about the VERY small group of people who have legit, medical reasons not to get one.

I don't see the big lines requiring a vaccination. They don't require one for any other disease such a measles. Also, millions will and millions will not get the vaccine. The cruise lines can't afford to shut out that many customers.

But what other diseases have shut down the industry for over a year?

Its better to have some cruising that will then have no one cruising because some won't.

I think this may be the first pandemic since the proliferation of the modern cruise industry. Our response to the pandemic is something we can control. The pandemic, in my opinion, not so much.

exactly. all companies and business are in survival mode right now. Cruise companies are hemorrhaging money right now. They are going to make decisions based on financial reasons, not reasons to be nice to passengers. If requiring vaccinations means DCL can restart sailings and at least TRY to stop the money hemorrhage then its a better financial decision then to just not restart in order to keep passengers happy.

I see soo much head in the sand all across the cruise forum, in all threads. Are people really expecting the same DCL experience as they have always known, the large crowds, the same kids club , the same dining experiences etc etc just with a bit more cleaning and a bigger emphasis on hand washing??? :confused3

Cruise companies might not, but some countries might, just like those requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination now. Airlines might also make it a requirement.

This is why I think many itineraries will change to make more room for private islands in 2021.

You missed my point. Measles his highly contagious and can cause very serious medical problems especially in children under 5 years. No one requires proof of a vaccination for measles despite the fact that it has not been 100% eradicated. Things need to be in context.

Correct. Measles is a horrific disease, especially for young children. However, we are not having a MASSIVE measles outbreak, mostly because most areas have achieved herd immunity due to effective vaccinations campaigns. (and the vaccine being required for children to attend school in many communities)

If measles were decimating communities the way COVID is now, I suspect proof of immunity would be required.

But we are not in a pandemic due to measles.
We are in a pandemic due to covid-19.

Well, Alabama went from 80,000 this time last week to over 160,000 as of yesterday, so moving to Phase 1b has definitely moved the needle in terms of number vaccinated. Again, I think that Johnson & Johnson is the one to watch if it gets approved in a few weeks. Mainly because it's a one-dose shot, which, above all of the other advantages to that is that it's effectively double the supply (per dosage) of Pfizer or Moderna right off the bat...

Yes! One dose AND stored in a standard fridge. That will make a big difference for rural populations (I’m in Montana and the vastness in between population centers out west is a real concern right now for getting both doses scheduled to the far reaches before they spoil).

Yep. Some news outlets are reporting that it could be as soon as next Thursday. Also, J&J clarified that when they said they'd only have up to 10 million doses ready (they have promised 1 Billion for 2021), they were referring to Day 1 and it would ramp up throughout February. They expect to be at full delivery in March.
