Are shorts allowed in the main dining areas? I know Paolo etc is different. I thought I had read that Disney had changed the main dining rules and was allowing shorts. Just looked at packing list on DCL website and it says no shorts.

Yes, shorts are allowed in the dining rooms.

The "rules" do say no shorts for dinner in the MDR's but we did see people wearing them. They won't tell you no but it is discouraged. We wore nice jeans (we are not dress up people) and were not over or under dressed.
I must admit, I would have felt under dressed in shorts.

We saw everything from elaborate gowns/tux to shorts. If you aren't a dress up person, one pair of jeans or capri's for the ladies would be fine. Palo & Remy are the exception and require a slightly dressier attire.

Just got off Fantasy and only thing I did not see in MDR was swim suits. For formal night 90% made some effort to particapate in some fashion.

I've read this on DIS a lot, so imagine my surprise when two days ago I got a planning guide from DCL that said:

"Dinner attire is "cruise casual," meaning no shorts, swimwear or tank tops. Diners at Palo or Remy, the adults-only restaurants, will want to dress more formally than when dining at our other restaurants. Disney Cruise Line's daily
newsletter, Personal Navigator, will be delivered daily to your stateroom with attire advice for each night's dinner."

Mine says the same thing but I cruised at the end of April and they are permitted. We asked because my 2 boys wanted to wear shorts to dinner.

I am taking this directly from the cruise booklet we received last week for our upcoming cruise:

Cruise Casual – no swimwear or tank tops
Pirate or Tropical Night (on most cruises)
Dress Up – jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women
Semi-Formal – suit/jacket for men; dress or pantsuit for women
Formal – tuxedo or suit for men; gown or dress for women

Palo – shirt or jacket for men with dress pants; dress or pantsuit for women. Please, no jeans, shorts, capri pants, flip flops or tennis shoes.

Now the dress code for men in Palo gave my husband a laugh—shirt OR jacket.

FWIW, I don't think anyone has gotten kicked out of the dining room for wearing shorts.

Yeah, I think the planning guides have not been updated but I was pretty sure that my cruise booklet didn't mention shorts but I wasn't 100% sure. Thanks for clearing it up.

It would be rather amusing if someone got confused with Palo's dress code and showed in a jacket without a shirt.

Just to add that "formal night" has become something a lot less than that----on our cruise last Oct I don't recall seeing ANY Tuxedos and very few formal gowns.

In fact, actual "suits" were few and far between. Men who did wear a jacket usually did so ala sportcoat and slacks.

Ties were also somewhat rare---

And lots of folks wore shorts long before the actual policy change--which of course is WHY the policy changed
