They're being allowed to transfer their DCL funds to book a new cruise for only a $300 pp fee? If so, that's great.

That's what I'm thinking. DCL doesn't have to do anything so I feel that is very generous of them. Sorry for your friends' situation, KC Fan but I hope they took advantage of this.

While I hate adding that extra cost of insurance onto the already high price of a Disney Cruise I always do. I also like to book my flights with enough time so that if they are canceled I have time to drive (24 hour drive). That wouldn't have worked in this situation obviously, but it's peace of mind for me. ;)

My 2 girls (aged 25) are taking one of those tour groups for young folks (EF Ultimate Break) to Japan and Korea, flying out today. And flight was cancelled yesterday and they have had a time getting new ones and will miss the connecting and have to stay overnight in Seoul when they need to be heading to Japan first. Been at the airport since early this morning after being on multiple phone calls with like 2-3 hour holds all day yesterday. I feel bad for them. And the tour group, which they paid good money for this, is not helping at all.

My son was scheduled to fly from Indy to Boston yesterday, but since it was cancelled his company was able to get him on a flight today, $700 one way. Crazy!

The ship sailed on Friday. The outage happened on Friday. Do I have that correct?

The day before (Thursday) was before the outage? So, just the normal random delays and cancellations?

So if they had a flight scheduled for Friday morning …. Great chance of missing cruise, but Thursday might have been no problem?

I read Southwest was on old software and didn’t have an issue.

I am prepared to stand corrected if I have the timing wrong.
The outage started Friday morning in Europe which would have been Thursday late evening in LA. I’m guessing this family was red eyeing out and were on one of the flights that got canceled right when the issue started.

Always fly in the day before. The ships usually leave on Saturday. Maybe still time to make it to MCO by 4 tomorrow??
After this glitch, I am going to start advise folks that they need to fly two days ahead....

and travel insurance moving forward is a requirement if you are flying to the port - and don't buy it from Disney either!

The reality is when there are these major glitches there no longer is the excess capacity... Getting there by 4 depending on what time you were flying out on Friday may or may not have been possible... Especially if you were flying Delta...

4) This one takes a gut feeling leap of faith, and it's a gamble. But if my flight is delayed and there's one in an hour or two that's still listed as on time, I usually switch to the later one if there are seats available. If a flight is delayed once, there's a decent chance it will be delayed again. And maybe again. And then maybe cancelled.

5) This last one only works when you've given yourself an extra day to get there. But when it's a HUGE mess like yesterday was, don't wait around. In situations like yesterday, the reality is that it may take a day or two until you can get on a flight to your actual destination. So if getting on that cruise is the top priority for you, ask the airline if there are any flights departing that would get you relatively close to your destination. Then rent a car the rest of the way. Or hop in your car and start driving.
I think the way you do... and when these situations emerge, I have to admit... I am selfishly grateful that most travelers do not.... It usually means I am not the one on the national news talking about how I was stuck in the airport for a week....

Thanks for that time info. My online searching isn’t giving me info on when the shutdown happened.

I am going to edit mine to remove any confusion.

I think you always allow yourself enough time to DRIVE to the port from home in time to reasonably make the cruise. For example, if you live in Atlanta, you probably can book flights to Orlando on the afternoon before the cruise. And frankly, if you live in Atlanta or closer to the ports, you probably should consider driving in the first place. I know for our cruise earlier this summer, my game plan was that if our flight got cancelled and we were at risk, we'd just rent a car for the whole journey and drive all day and then much of the departure day to get to the port in time. Probably 15 hours the day before the cruise and six on departure day.

Except if the outage happened when you did fly.

It doesn't matter if you're two or five days early. That outage can happen anytime... Then there you are.. Stuck in an airport.

Not necessarily. That's where being proactive and decisive comes in. In this case, some flights started resuming by 8am, and some airlines were hit harder than others. So that's when you start looking at other airlines and/or you start looking for ways to get as close to your destination as possible (and then rent a car or Uber from there). And if you can't figure out a solution, you hop in the car and start driving. The longer buffer you give yourself before the cruise, the more options you have.

This is what we had to do for our cruise in June. Our flight (TUS>DFW>MCO) was cancelled while we were at the terminal due to the crazy weather in Dallas this summer. We had to make a quick decision and grabbed the last 3 seats on a Southwest flight out of Phoenix on my phone while pretty much everyone else was lined up to talk to gate agent.

It cost us a good chunk of money and we had to get our bags and drive 2 hours to Phoenix fairly quickly but I'm convinced we would have missed our cruise otherwise (even though we were booked two days ahead). Several others in our cruise group ended up driving through the night (not really an option for us being 30+ hours away). I got updates from American over the next 2 days that they kept rebooking me on flights and those flights kept getting cancelled so I'm glad we quickly pivoted (we had travel insurance but it would have been so not fun to miss the cruise).

In the future, I'm going to keep planning to arrive 2 days before, always book direct flights if possible, and know my back up plan in advance.

the point is the outage can happen at ANY time. Yes, you can schedule ahead so if you do encounter an outage you can have more available options, however by scheduling early you can't avoid an outage.

This reminds me of a post I saw on here once, a while ago. Sorry I don't remember who it was so I can't give credit. I hope I remember the story correctly though. They booked their flight the day before as we all know is "best". It got delayed, delayed, delayed, finally canceled and it was too late for them to drive then. They tried getting on the next morning flight but it was full. They missed the cruise. They watched that early morning flight the next day and it made it just fine. Had they booked that "day of" flight originally they would have had no problem. You just never know! :sad2:

Right that's the whole point! If you give yourself a big buffer zone, you'll be better positioned to prevail over the unexpected.

Just stated that her flight got cancelled and was wondering if anyone else was going through the same. Didn't say anything about terrorism. I understand that it has affected the US and the world.
Yup, you did. But I wanted to put out there it was announced that it wasn’t terrorism so that line of thinking wasn’t going to blow up the boards. You are correct.

I like peppermint ice cream.

I just wanted to put that out there so no one wondered, just in case it became a big topic.

Of course no one has mentioned peppermint ice cream but me, but just in case...

I feel your comment was hurtful and that was your aim. I never set out to disparage.

Agreed that the sarcasm is uncalled for; in the immediate aftermath of so much disruption there were people wondering if it was due to some kind of attack. Please remember to treat each other with kindness.
