News flash! Stampede in Chicago nightclub kills some, injures many!

News flash! (2/21/03) Fire in Rhode Island nightclub, stampede kills many, injures many!

Moral of the story: If you are in a crowded place, you might want to consider not only looking for, but also rehearsing an emergency exit, to be sure it is passable all the way to safety.

(Actually this post is for restaurant and nightclub owners also.)

Also, the Haunted Castle at Six Flags Great Adventure had the same thing happened many years ago... I think 8 people died in that tragedy...

Its not just clubs, restaurants, but really anywhere.

Crowds anywhere are a danger. Look at even outside venues over the years where stampedes have occurred. Masses of people can spell danger. I do agree with knowing your options, ahead of time.

I was just going to post the same thing. When I was a kid several teenagers from our town were killed in a nightclub fire in Port Chester, NY. In NY, the drinking age was only 18 so these were just kids themselves. Ever since then, I've made it a habit to look for the exits whenever I go to a restaurant, show or stay in a hotel. The firemen today said the RI club had four working exits but human nature is to use the door you came in through. They found people piled up like wood.

This is a very sad tragedy.

OMG, I remember that. Those kids were about my age at the time. I used to go to GA all the time back then. After it happened, they had the area blocked off from the public for a while, then they turned the area where the trailers had been (several metal trailers made up the haunted mansion) into a garden area with a wrought iron railing around it. I bet not many people can still remember the exact spot now because it just looks like a nice little area with flowers and grass and trees, but I sure remember where it was/is. :(

When I was about 10, my grandmother told me to always look for an exit other than the one you came in. I laughed at her then for being overly cautious, but I'm grateful she said that now and always make a point to do it.

I think that a lot of people also don't want to look like they panic easily, so they wait until they can actually see the fire. DH and I were at a movie theater before when the fire alarm went off. I dragged him to the exit by the screen very quickly while literally everyone else in the theater stayed in their seats. When we got out the door, the people running the projector turned the movie off, and then all the people finally got up.

Truer words were never spoken. My dad was a firefighter, so we grew up looking 'for another way out' no matter where we were. I can remember my dad telling us when we were staying in and older Inn that was not super accessible to get out of, "Hell, jump out the window, it's less than 2 full stories, broken legs will heal."

I am compulsive about knowing where my options are to the point of obssesive.

These stories are so sad! They keep playing the footage of the RI fire over and over on CNN. Apparently there were 4 exits but everyone panicked and crowded to the front exit.
When I think of all the times when I was younger and out at the clubs, often one big room packed with people and no windows!

I usually always scope out the fire exit in a crowded place. My grandpa was a safety nut and always pointed out things like that. Another big thing I always do when I check into a hotel is count the doors to the nearest fire exit as well as pack a flashlight. If the lights are out and it is smoky you might not be able to see the exit so if you count the doors you can crawl along and count them as you go along until you reach the exit.

I do as well... we are probably the same age! Apparently two people that died were from my high school (Lenape) and maybe a few from RV!

Yes, I haven't been back in a long time.. I will reflect at the flowers.
