Crowded at the end of AUG?

We are going down the end of August of this summer. Does anyone know if it gets really crowded then. Also are the DVC resorts less crowded during this time than other resorts? Let me know!

I'm also curious as to "end" of August. But, what is "end of August" anyways. We are considering a trip from Aug. 14-Aug. 28 or so. So, actually, we are considering "mid" August versus "end" of August. I know it will be hot, but wondering about the crowds.

Welcome to the DIS, Giants77!

The last week of August is a lot lighter crowdwise than the rest of August, as a lot of the schools in the south are back in session by then. I went the third week of August in 2003, and found the crowds to be overwhelming at times. My sister went the week after me and had no problems getting on rides.

We'll be there that last week in Aug, 26th through Sep 3.

Its our first summertime visit and while I realize the weather will be much hotter, I'm hoping the crowds are not nearly as bad as midsummer because of the schools going back. I noticed that Disney starts to cut back the hours after the 15th, so I took that as a good sign the crowds are lighter.

Two years ago I went the last week of Aug (meaning the week immediately preceeding LD weekend). I thought the crowds were almost perfect. Well, at least much better than June. I am going 8/29 - 9/5 this year and hoping for the same level of crowds. The only thing that may increase the crowds is the number of people who took advantage of the free dining.

Any hoo - I have vacationed the last week of August in other locations and it tends to be considered an off season week everywhere b/c most kids are back in school. Crowds are reduced in all vacation areas. I recommend it.

Historically, it is lighter at the end of August, but this year might be different due to the free meal plan. We will be there 8/22-8/28 before our cruise (not on the free dining plan though :sad2: )

Last year I went the last two weeks in August.

I would not call the crowd light, but it was not insane either.

Because of the impact of the free dining which starts on 8/21, one cannot base projections for "late" August 2005 on the experience of past years.

From what I've seen, a large segment of guests has either made new plans to visit starting right when the free dining opens, or are changing prior ressies (some from other weeks in August) to dates on or after 8/21. That would argue that the fourth week in August will likely be somewhat "busier" than normal.

As for the third week, given the fact those wanting the dining discount aren't going to be there -- and the fact just about every southern school system (outside North Carolina) starts by the second week in August -- I would predict that week (starting 8/15) is going to be slower than usual.

We are staying at the Polynesian 8/24 - 8/30 ... and I noticed that all four room types at the polynesian are still availalbe for those dates - same with the GF - and it is only 35 days away. Judging by this alone, I believe there will be lower occupancy rates.

We went last year, same time, and while crowds were not 'light', it certainly was nothing like June or July. Florida kids are back in school by then, but weekends still get jammed. All in all, it is a good time to go if you can stand the heat.

As well as just about all of the rest of the South (crowds at WDW are affected by more than just Floridians!)
