We are starting our trip on June 7th this year. It will be my mom, sister, 2 yo niece, and BIL's first trip. I think your first trip should always start at MK....it just starts the magic of the week off in the right direction. I noticed though that our first day is the MK scheduled day for gay days. Just how much more crowded does it get? I want them to experience the magic of MK but if it is super crowded I feel it might ruin it a bit for them. Should we start at MK the next day? If so what park would you suggest for the first day for someone that has never been?????

In my experience the crowd predictors are usually spot on, I use undercover tourist to decide. Disney is super exciting no matter where you start. We don't usually start any where special but are sure to end the trip with MK. Summer is already a very busy time of year as it is so I would most def follow the crowd calendars. Anytime I bring someone for the first time they are just so happy to be there and don't have as much expectations so they will probably enjoy anywhere! Enjoy your trip, try not to pressure yourself into showing them every single thing, I've done that and overwhelmed myself :)

According to Touring Plans, as of right now, June 7th is a 5 level crowd day in the Magic Kingdom. After that day, the days at Magic Kingdom are all 6's or 7's until June 15th, so I'd stick with your plans to visit MK on the 7th. We've been many times and always start our visits off with MK, even if we end up hopping to another park later on. I don't truly feel like I'm at WDW until I'm walking down Main Street USA towards the castle. :-)

We very often find our visits coinciding with GayDays, as that is the week after school ends and before summer daycamp starts.

IME, crowd levels on Gay Day at the MK tend to vary greatly by time of day, and by what is going on that night and the previous night.

Your best bet is to go look at the events schedule on the official GayDays website. If there is a major park party the night before, morning crowds will be lower, and if there is a major park party late that evening, the crowds will be lower after 4 pm. However, if the parties don't coincide, you can expect the park to be crowded for much of the day.

One thing that I have noticed over the years, however, is that as the event becomes more well-publicized outside of the gay community, a lot of straight tourists will make it a point to avoid the park of the day, which ironically can cut down on the crowd. We went one day where MK was the designated park, but there was a HUGE ticketed evening party at DHS. A lot of attendees chose to leave MK in the middle of the afternoon and not come back, as they were headed for that party. The park was amazingly empty after 6 pm, because of all of the other tourists who had deliberately avoided it that day.

Speaking of which, if you don't hop, and you want to get your money's worth with long park hours, do check on those private in-park parties. When they happen, that park will close early, even in high season.

We went to Disneyland and it was Gay Day. Didn't do any search before our trip for crowds, didn't know it was Gay Day. It was pretty crowded. This is Disneyland, I don't know about WDW.

Check out easywdw.com. They have the best crowd predictors i have seen.

I have been that week for the past two years. I avoided DHS as it was not only the designated day but SWW.

I went to Mk on the designated day. It was not too crowded and the crowd level had nothing to do with gay days. I saw more red shirts than usual but aside from that there was no problem.

The other days i went to a different park than the desginated gay day park but only because of josh's recommendations and not because of gay days.

i went to MK a few years back on Gay Day and the crowd level was very "normal" for MK. I can honestly say it was one of my favorite days ever at MK, as the crowds were filled with awesomely happy adults! It was a truly memorable experience, and I've never seen a group of adults getting into the spirit of Disney like that! The parade was extra fun cause everyone was up dancing around and having a blast. Totally would do it again!
