For those of you who cross stitch, do you always use a hoop? Does it make that much of a difference if you don't? (I want to start a project I have but don't really feel like driving all the way to Michael's!!!) Thank you!

I always use a hoop. It makes the fabric straight and keeps your stitches even. And it's much easier on counted cross stitch to have a taut piece of fabric. The important part is to remove it from the hoop when you're not actively stitching it else it stretches and leaves marks on the fabric & threads.

Without the hoop, I think cross-stitching is near impossible.

Whoops....guess I'm in the minority....NEVER use a hoop!
I have been doing cross stitch for about 35 years. Even sell them at fairs.
DD doesn't use a hoop either.

I'm with Meriweather- no hoop for me either. I don't cross stitch much anymore but I used to do a ton of it. Now I save what little eyesight I have left :o and scrapbook instead!!

I was taught without the hoop and that's the way I prefer. Count me among the "hoopless".

I used to use one several years ago. I don't use one now and I have to say it is easier on my hands.

Me either, never use a hoop... much prefer the loose fabric. (And I even do over one that way. :))
