Crocs Warning

Glad to hear no one was seriously hurt. Thanks for bringing this to my attention; I had never thought about it, and my DDs live in their crocs nearly all year.

I am glad as well that DD is okay.

DH thinks I am paranoid, but I don't let my DD use the escalator unless I am carrying her. (she's only 3)

Now I don't feel so paranoid for being cautious.

I think the kids will be using the elevator for quite a while.

I'm a clutzy person and live in my crocs, so I am appreciative of the warning.

I just want to bump this back to the front so more people can become aware of this. I am glad your DD is alright.

I'm just trying to imagine the head-stand you'd have to do to get your hair caught in an escalator.

Glad your daughter is ok, and I'm adding this to my long, long list of why I'll never, ever wear Crocs.

No flames here just thanks for the warning...I love Crocs and DD's wear them all the time. I will warn them and watch them closely. :goodvibes

Glad your daughter is okay. I would write a letter to the Crocs people. I knew there was a reason I did not like these shoes (besides the way they look).

Please be careful with ANY shoe on the escalators. In 2001 we were in an airport terminal and my DS 7, at the time, had his tennis shoe caught in the escalator. Thank goodness the machine did shut down but it chewed his tennnis up. His foot was ok as he had balled it up in his shoes. Every since that incident we are all very careful when using the escalator. I still to this day always tell the DS's, 13 & 11 now, to pick-up their feet as reach the end of the escalator.

Any kind of shoe can have a problem on the escalators. You just need to be careful.
Gotta watch out for the trolls that live under the escalators too! :teeth:

I would agree that it could be a dangerous situation, but I don't see how it's particular to Crocs. You see tons of people in the parks (and all over) weart those Teva style sandals, flipflops, mesh shoes, etc. I would think the main message is to be careful on escalators - not that Crocs are deadly. :confused3 I'm not a huge Croc fan or anything, so I don't really care about trying to defend them. I just think people are missing the point. My little sister had a tennis shoe totally destroyed by an escalator when we were kids, more than 20 years ago. With my little guy, I always make a big game of "jumping" off and way over the teeth at the end while I hold his hand.

OMG!! When I was little Mom was SOOOOO cautious with us about escalators I had bad dreams about them and the creatures that lived under there!!!

I live in Little Rock, AR, unfortunately the home of the most reported escalator vs. croc cases. AR Children's Hospital is campaigning for stricter safety codes for escalators, since ours haven't been updated since the mid-80's and are behind most states.

I don't think this is a reason to totally abandon crocs, but I can say that I am always very aware of where I stand on escalators, especially in my crocs.

And to the OP, I am so thankful your story has a happy, 5-toed ending!

Maybe the problem with Crocs is that they are just so much bigger than the foot. I can see where it would be easy to think that you are standing much farther away from the edge when in reality your shoe is too close.

(Just another reason I won't wear the things.)

Wow. This is scary. I didn't know ANYTHING about this. Thanks for the warning. I have always hated crocs considering as they are probably the ugliest shoes ever made.. BUT i recently broke down and bought them after I read all the good things about crocs and disney world on the dis. I only plan on wearing them there and never again so i will definitely be extra careful now! Thanks again!

Well said! I do/did the same kinda thing with my kids. I usually time it and count to 3 for the jump. Education, Safety and fun all mixed into one.:) Any type of footwear is dangerous on escalators. Rubber soled seems to be the worst culprit. Think about it, a hard sole dress shoe will slide whereas a rubber sole will grip not giving you a chance to get away as easy.

I have seen ppl do the most stupid things on escalators so I could actually picture hair getting caught. Dumb idiots bending to tie their shoes AFTER they get on the darn moving stairs. DUH! Dont get me started on ppl with strollers. One thing to pick up the stroller completely off the stairs(one person in front and one in back to hold it) in itself dangerous enuf but the rolling it on and not paying attention thing just makes me want to smack ppl. I was working at a mall booth selling stuff that sat right along side the UP escalator. Within a months time I must have seen it stop at least 4 times for strollers, the worst being when the dingdongs pushing one on were so ingorssed in conversation behind them that front part of the stroller (the cloth foot rest)was already down into the step before they noticed. Luckily they were only about 6 steps up the thing and my first impulse was to lean over and grab the kid out (who luckily wasnt belted in) when they started screaming. In the meantime someone had sense to hit the EStop. It was pretty funny to see ppl leaping over the sides.

Thank goodness she is ok. I was thinking about getting them for my ds but have decided not to.

I am so glad you posted this, especially after reading the messages. There was alot about this type of situation on the news around September or so here so I thought it was old news. Several instances of this happening.

Thank goodness your daughter is okay! I think a main problem is that there is NO protection from the shoe and sure it is a split second and eaten through. We have them and I used to not let ds really wear them out in public (to the mall) but have been more lenient lately. Thanks again, for this!

glad shes okay. Also watch out for shoe laces they can get caught at thte top or bottom.

Thats why I only let my daughter wearhealys in the park.

This was sarcastic right?!:lmao: Healys are so dangerous in other ways that to have them highlighted as a "safe" shoe to wear in the parks where they are actually not supposed to be worn at all is striking me as quite amusing!! :rotfl2:

I just got my step daughter some crocs for Christmas...now I'm going to worry when she wears them...like I need another darn thing to worry about! and I certainly will not be getting a pair for my four year old step son who trips on air and walks forward while looking backwards...he'd be the one kid to get his toes eaten by an escalator! Nope, steel toed doc martens for that boy!:cool1:

We were the shoe lace victims at Ebcot!!

Dd was 3 1/2 yrs old and we were going down the escalator and at the bottom the teeth grabbed her shoelace, I was a step ahead of her as she was hesitant to board the escalator, when it happened I grabbed her up and was pulling her away from the step but it was pulling the lace more and more, and I didn't want to risk letting go of her to remove her shoe, I was yelling help help and people were just staring, finally a man leaned down and grabbed the lace and it popped out!!

I was so greatful for his help, he made all the difference!! And I promptly bought Dd Velcro closure shoes!! No more dangling laces!!
