The Running Thread - 2026

"I can’t do a vest in summer: that’s waaay too hot. But truly, anything cold is not within minutes in FL summer. I pack my water bottle with Nuun ice cubes and by he time I start sipping 1/2 a mile in, it’s mostly melted, even in an insulated bottle. There’s really nothing that makes the heat less hot here, but I was hoping maybe I could at least forego sunscreen and not be any hotter - no dice, it seems."

If a running vest with the water bag 3/4 filled with ice isn't workable, another thing to try is half filling your water bottles with water and putting them in the freezer to freeze overnight. Put the nuun tablet in the water when you fill up right before the run, and it will mix with the ice water as it melts.

But yeah, if a vest is just too hot in those conditions, it is what it is. You’re dealing with a pretty brutal setup. Unless there's a park near you with lots of shade that you can run at instead of your normal route, not sure if there's a magic bullet to solve the problem.

I’ve got a good system for dealing with the heat, tbh. Mostly it involves sucking it up and complaining about it lol! Like it’s just plain HOT. Absolutely nothing actually mitigates that, but it also doesn’t hurt me: I’m well acclimated after 30+ years and do as much running in the dark or shade as possible, pour water over me at drinking fountains in the park, etc. I do need sun protection once the sun’s up, though and I was thinking maybe I could skip some sunscreen by pulling on sleeves or a shirt at that point, but nope - sunscreen’s still the better option.

March Running
185.6 Miles

Ran the Love Run half in Philadelphia Sunday. Went well but due to me being a bonehead/oblivious, could have gone slightly better. Was hoping to run under 1:30. Went out with that pace group and we ripped the first few miles. By mile 4, the pacers were saying we were already :50 seconds under pace. I wasn't paying much attention to my watch and I don't think there were any mile markers until mile 7, and by that time we were running long due to the buildings the first few miles throwing things off. Stayed with the pace group until mile 12 (still saying we were under lol), then sped up. Finished in 1:30:17. I should have looked at my watch more and started to start pushing it at mile 10. Nice event overall, perfect weather (31, sunny, light breeze) and a relatively flat course. I know there's a handful here from the Philly area, I'd recommend it if you're looking for a spring half.

Having listened to the guys who did Keys who had the same problem, I'm paranoid about this possibility. If/when I try this, I plan on double bagging the ice or using a solid ice pack. (BTW this whole discussion has me figuring out potential plans for Springtime)
I specifically chafed where my sports bra sat, so my solution was to apply KT tape to that spot before heading out.

Also, having done both, I preferred tying the ends to loops on my hydration vest as opposed to around my neck.

So I took a long sleeve UV shirt out on a 45-minute test run: 87º, full sun, but only 47% humidity, and…

OOOOH ABSOLUTELY NOT! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

Like being wrapped in Saran Wrap and left in a sauna. Couldn’t tear the shirt off fast enough once I got into the AC. Sunscreen is nowhere near that bad! There’s a reason I never see other FL runners in long sleeves in summer. :rotfl:
Instead of a UV shirt, why not try a skin cooler? They're designed to have water poured on them and keep you cool while you run. Lots of ultra runners and us triathletes uses them. They work really well as long as you keep them wet once or twice an hour.

A short shoe review/endorsement for anyone interested in exploring "alternative" brands...

A couple weeks ago, I looked into Mount to Coast shoes, which are designed speficially with ultra runners in mind. Since I'm a slow 6+ hour marathoner, I thought they were worth checking out.

The tl;dr is: they won't work for me - at least with the current design - but WOW, this is a really interesting shoe company worth others' attention IMO!

I tried the R1, which is their neutral road shoe, marketed to a slow-ish pace and designed for many, many hours of running at a time. It's good. Like, really, really good. The foam is like nothing I've ever experienced: simultaneously well cushioned, supportively firm, and forgiving. The longer I had them on, the better the foam felt! MtC's other neat feature is separate lacing for the forefoot, so you can really tailor the fit and/or tighten or loosen things quickly as needed. The forefoot has a ton of volume, though it does have a taper (so not as much horizontal space for toes as an Altra or Topo, but plenty of vertical space, and much more space overall than most running shoes.) The shoes are very light in weight. No noticeable rocker, but not a ton of flex, either: just enough rigidity to feel stable, but not so much as to feel like a brick.

The only con for me was, alas, a high enough arch bump that I was forced to send them back. If you've ever tried Topos, it's similar to that, but less pronounced. It felt like some of the Hoka models I've tried, though the rest of the fit was quite different. I think for most folks, it'll be a non-issue, but I can't handle any medial bias, and MtC's arch has just enough bias to be a problem for me.

But for anyone else logging long miles this is definitely worth putting on your radar! I held onto them for two weeks, hoping I could just get used to the arch, because the rest of the shoe was that good.

How have I never heard of these before?

How do they handle repeated washings? They are definitely pricey, but possibly worth it if they last. I could see getting one more summer long runs.

I LOVE my R1s! I am on my 3rd pair! They have been my (non marathon pace) long run shoe since last summer. I actually ran the majority of my easy runs in them too during my last marathon build. The support is great. When I first put them on the arch felt weird to me too, but once running it worked for me.

Parks Youtube just posted something interesting: Behind the Scenes at RD! Kinda neat if you wanted to see how they put this all together.

This is SO COOL! I do a lot of events in my work, so it's pretty fun to see how they do it. I especially love that they used PW so we got to hear a little chatter about the weather scare for the 10K.

Very cool! I sometimes forget all the work that goes into putting these on! I also never thought about the fact that they have to keep us from breaking an ankle on the tracks in MK!

Of course I now have FOMO that I'm not doing Springtime Surprise 😂

Observing all the logistics is one of my favorite things about RunDisney (and other events). I always picture the person in charge not sleeping for weeks leading up to the event.

Seeing things behind the scenes is one of my favorite parts of rD races, so this was extra fun - thanks for sharing!

Also, really missing my days in retail merchandising right now…

It gave me goosebumps thinking on how proud they feel of seeing the job done, having taking care of so many details… it is unbelievable hard work from many many people that we don't get to see and yet we feel them!
