Crocs unsafe footwear for school?

We got a memo from school indicating that Crocs are considered unsafe footwear for school.

Anyone else hear this from school? Kind of irritates me as my DD pretty much lives in Crocs (except for Gym days - I make her wear tennis shoes on those days).

In preschool, my son wasn't allowed to wear crocs because on the playground, sand would get into his shoe and he would FREAK. He hates that feeling LOL - I never thought about it when I sent him to school. This year, I haven't tried to send him in crocs yet.. but I've seen other kids wearing them. And DS is older and really doesn't care what gets in his shoes LOL. But he fell in love with some DC shoes and is totally in love with them now LOL

we can't wear flip flops or crocs- a girls foot was basically impaled by a huge piece of mulch last yr that went through her shoe! (they held it up at K orientation just to show why the rule) anyway crocs really don't provide the proper cushioning or support for kids feet (if they wear them too much )

Kids wear them at our school. In 5th grades and below their only rule is it has to have a back strap. 6th and above they let wear about anything, even flip flops!

Hmmm ... I hadn't thought of that, there are some pretty large pieces of mulch on the playground.

My daughter trips all of the time in hers, even with the strap. She seems to drag the front of her foot causing her to trip. I haven't seen anything from our school yet but I'm guessing it's because of more accidents with them.

we (our kinder teaching team) banned crocs last year. One of my students ended up in the ER for an impaled foot. He was running on the tan bark and it went straight thru his croc. The bottoms are too thin to protect the feet. We had thought they were a great alternative to the open toe shoes and flip flops that were already banned, i mean we have no escolaters (sp?) so we thought we were safe.
If a kids comes in open toe shoes or crocs it is a recess inside at the table reading or coloring.

My boys live in their Crocs but they are forever tripping over their own feet when wearing them. We have a rule of no running when wearing them (not that it matters since they trip when they walk too! LOL)

I know that our pre-school and Elementary schools have "banned" crocs, but they also require that only tennis shoes with socks be worn for safety reasons too. They want the kids to be able to run and play on the playground, and at the preschool they said that kids were slipping on the "rungs" of the climbing structure and falling, and also just getting the bark/sand in the shoes was very uncomfortable. Also, they said that when the kids were running on the playground (Elementary school) that they would often lose a shoe and also many twisted their ankles at the same time.

There is no perfect solution, but I also usually accept what the teachers say, and I have yet to meet one who feels they are appropriate footwear for school. That said, my kids live in flip flops and sandals for much of the summer, but they know that where school or camp is concerned that it is all about wearing tennis shoes.

Banned in our schools, too, though the language doesn't specifically reference "crocs" - it's something along the lines of shoes "must tie or close with Velcro, and stay on the feet until the tie or Velcro is loosened". So crocs, flip-flops, slides, etc are a no-go. They enforce it, too - a friend of mine had to bring her DD a new pair of shoes on the second day of school, and whined about it. I was like "so....did you think there was an 'except for my daughter' clause?"

We have a rule of no wearing crocs while playing outside or at playgrounds. Well, one day DS5 talked DH into stoping at the park for a few minutes. DS was wearing crocs. Ds slipped climbing and ripped him toenail off.:scared1: All summer we had to tape him toe to swim or put a bandaid on for anything else.

Crocs definitely aren't the best choice for play.

Same thing here...no crocs.many,Many injuries from kids running and falling, lack of support for growing feet etc.My DD loves her crocs but will not be wearing them to school or wdw.She has fallen way too many times when she tries to run .

Our school has P.E. every day so the kids have to wear sneakers. They can't wear sandals or crocs. From a dressing standpoint I am kind of disappointed but I completely understand the safety issue.

I think those slides and mules and slipon shoes are just as bad! :scared1: I am sure they are a nightmare for the gym teacher, you can't really run in slides! I hate how the stores make so many of those un-playground friendly shoes anymore, too. We love crocs in my house, but ONLY in the summer. My 4th grader tries to wear them to school but I direct him back to his tennies. He keeps reminding me that if he wears them to school, if he isn't allowed he doesn't have to do the laps everyone has to do in gym class (because to him, that's a good thing). :lmao:

My kids wear them some of the time. Our elementary school allows them, with backstraps on. I slipped, and fell and broke my leg a few months ago wearing a pair! :scared1: Rainy morning, running across my patio (bears had been in our backyard that am so I was hurrying to my car), I slipped on our slate walkway -- OUCH. The crocs, running, and the wet ground were so not a good combo!

My dd's elementary school and also my ds's preschool both do not allowed crocs, or sandals. Only completely closed toes shoe are allowed.
