Well I am trying to wait until the very last minute to postpone or go ahead with our plans. We are supposed to leave cleveland Tuesday morning and arrive in MCO at 12:00noon. With Ivan so uncertain at this point I am trying to look at all possibilities.

My questions are: Is it to be assumed that MCO will automatically be closed with ivan coming through? If it does close does it close all day or reopen once the hurricane passes in the same day. Hubby wants to see if we can change plans to fly into orlando in the evening....but I am more leaning towards wednesday arrival.

Has it ever happened that mco doesn't close and just delays flights with hurricanes coming close? I really an in the unknown so please help me out.

Oh, this is my first post!

Ivan's still probably 3 days away from impacting Central Florida, and lots can change in that time. The most current projections have the eye of the storm tracking out in the Gulf of Mexico, with Orlando being on the fringes of the storm area.

This one could cause just normal rain in Orlando, OR heavy rain and wind with tornados, OR change paths and bring hurricane force weather to Orlando... Let's pray it's just the light rain.

I would sit tight for now, and take another look at the storm forecasts tomorrow.

As far as MCO automatically being closed, I don't think anything's "automatic". But if the storm looks very likely to make travel into MCO dangerous, trust that they will make the right decisions based on safety.

Right now, the path is not bearing down on Orlando. Let's see if the projected path changes over the next 24 hours- we'll have a much more reliable picture then.

With Frances, they closed Friday at noon and did not re-open until Monday at noon. The main part of the storm hit Orlando Saturday and Sunday. Also, the airlines chose to cancel some flights either before or after those times. I don't believe Southwest flew any flights on Monday at MCO. One thing they were concerned with was people stranded at the airport during Charley. I don't think they wanted a repeat of that, they kept emphasizing that it was not a shelter, no one could stay there during the storm. I think that is the reason they closed early on Friday.
