‘Dum-Dum’ Robbery

L I T T L E R O C K, Ark. — A trail of "Dum-Dums" candy and wrappers leading away from a bank break-in did in a dumb-dumb suspect, police said.

Michael Brown was arraigned on robbery, commercial theft and burglary charges last week for a bungled bank heist where he left a trail of stolen candy and discarded wrappers that police used to track him down, police said.

On Nov. 18, Brown allegedly smashed the glass door of a bank in Marked Tree, Ark., in an attempted bank robbery. However, one of several problems the suspect faced was that there was no money for the taking: All the cash had been stashed away and secured because the bank was closed.

The only items available were a portable radio and some fistfuls of peppermints and Dum-Dums.

"At that point, the money and cash drawers had been put away and secured, and the only things available to him were a boom box and the candy," said Marked Tree police Detective Mark Robinson. "Apparently they had a huge bag of the stuff near the entranceway as well as in bowls on some of the desks."

So Brown allegedly took the radio and the candy, eating and dropping some along his path as he made his getaway.

Police followed the trail of wrappers and candy to the trailer park where Brown was staying.

Besides the trail he left, Brown also looked directly into the bank's security cameras and triggered the alarm during his botched heist, police said.

Police had been looking for Brown before the "Dum-Dum" robbery. He allegedly broke into a jewelry store on Nov. 10 and stole of case of rings. However, he didn't steal the real rings, police said.

"He stole the display in the window and got the plastic imitation rings," Robinson said. "He didn't get too much there, [in that robbery] either."

Brown remains in jail on $25,000 bond.
