I also tried the spray glue but it didn't last long so I threw them all out and started to buy more.

I saw a thread from 2peas where she used brake cleanerto remove everything from the mat, then scraped the crud off with a straight edge, then sprayed with quilters basting spray, being sure to cover the roller edges with painters tape. I am going to try it with one of my very old mats. This method takes the mat down to smooth--no sticky at all.
