Crib Rental Advice Needed

On two prior trips to WDW, we rented cribs from A Baby's Best Friend based on recommendations on this board. We never had problems with the cribs. But the last trip I was unhappy with ABBF's service because:

(1) We also rented toys for our then 13 month old; two toys were clearly low on battery and one "died" (no musics/sounds, etc.) mid-way through the week. My son would keep trying to hit the buttons and look puzzled at the lack of response. I called and left a message with ABBF explaining our disappointment while I was at the resort and asked if they could give us a partial refund. (I was thinking of maybe a dollar or two or at least an apology if they do not issue refunds -- the amount was not a real big deal to me.) They never called back and they never emailed me a response afterwards either.

(2) We ended up missing our flight home and the next available flight was for the next day. So while I was at the airport -- around 11 am -- I called and left a detailed message with ABBF (I have never caught a "live" person on its phone before) explaning our situation, that we had to stay one more night and if they could call me and let me know if I could do a last minute one night rental, etc. I left my cell phone number, repeating it several times. No one called me back that day! We checked back into OKW and by 3:30 pm I was getting frantic about the lack of a crib for my son (who hates pack n' plays) so I asked the front desk for a recommendation and they referred me to All About Kids. No problem with a one day rental and they delivered the crib by 5 pm. But we didn't like the All About Kids' crib as much as we liked the ABBF's cribs because the All About Kids' crib had only one setting on the bottom -- very low and difficult for us when we had to pick baby up -- and the mattress was not as thick as a "full size" mattress. It wasn't bad but not preferred.

So now I'm planning another trip back to WDW this December. (This is what happens when you buy APs!!!!) I really like ABBF's cribs but my last experience with their "service" left such a bad feeling that I really do not want to give them my business again. The toy incident was not that big of a deal; but never calling me back that day we were forced to spend an extra night really bugs me -- I was so frantic even a call telling me they had no cribs available would have been greatly appreciated so I could make alternative plans asap. But it seems like the only other rental company in the area that has "real" full size cribs like ABBF's is Children's Furniture Rental. But I hesitate because they set up in advance and I wonder if we would run into difficulty if for some reason we had to switch rooms -- could the cribs fit through the front door of the rooms?

Also, DS will be 20 months old the next trip. Should I expect that he would want to sleep in a toddler bed by then? I still don't know when we ought to move him out of his crib at home; he seems to sleep so well in his crib.

I'd appreciate hearing thoughts of experienced parents here!

I don't know anything about rentals and don't know how many in your party, but could your 20 month old ds sleep in a bed with you with bed rails on the other side? My ds was in a bed at 21 mos and had definately slept in a bed with us by then. That may eliminate the need to rent a crib. Disney will supply the bed rails- again, assuming you don't have too many adults to make that work.

Good luck!

Try Children's Furniture Rentals. I don't have their number handy, but you could do a search on this board to get it. We just used them in June and I highly recommend them! The price was VERY reasonable, and our crib was all set up in our resort when we got there. I think the person I talked to was named Roy. Oh, and it was a full sized, wooden crib (DD slept so easily in there...she hates PNP's!).
Hope that helps. :)

I have rented about 10 times from ABBF. Very surprised to hear about your negative experience. They have always been prompt, responsive and helpful. Not to mention that their strollers and cribs and toddler beds have been impeccably clean. I would give them another chance, but not before telling them, in a letter, about your less than satisfying experience.

Good luck!

Most 20 month olds will still be sleeping in a crib.

DS slept in his until 3. He never tried to climb out, so we didn't move him. DD is now 26 months. She can hop out of a pack n play in a hearbeat but still likes her crib and has never tried to get out. she is much, much too active to sleep well in a bed yet, but if she tries to climb out, we'll have to do it. DS wasn't like that & I think we could have moved him sooner.

Good luck finding a crib rental! It sounds like that will be the best thing for you. If you decide to go for a real bed on vacation, give it a try at home first.

Thanks everyone. I think we will go ahead and make a reservation with Children's Furniture Rental based on recommendations here on DIS. I have never used Baby's Away's Orlando franchise and never heard of anyone else on DIS using it. And we'll just wait and see if DS seems ready to move into a toddler bed. Frankly, we're not in a hurry to have him be "free" at night or in the morning -- growing up too fast for us as it is. I don't think we could ever count on a readiness sign vis-a-vis DS climbing out of his crib like other toddlers we've heard about -- I doubt he could climb out of his crib because we use one of those "sleep sacks" -- it prevents him from any serious climbing!

:cheer2: Just a word of caution, even with the sleep sack it didn't stop my little guy from climbing out! He'll be 2 at the end of this month , he's small for his age and still uses the xlarge 18-24 mth one, and low and behold came hopping down the hallway in his. Have no idea how he does it, doesn't make a sound getting out of the crib. Anyhow after trying him in a toddler bed for 3 wks and him waking up several times during the night, we resorted to setting up the crib with a "crib tent" on and everyone is now sleeping peacefully! :cheer2:

Thanks for the warning! I didn't think it would be possible with a sleep sack. Maybe you just have a particularly resourceful child! DH was surprised, too, when I mentioned your experience. Now we'll be on the lookout.

Scotch, your post has me worried. I placed and order with abbf late on Thursday night and they said I would receive a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours. I still haven't received anything from them. I used their service last October and was very pleased. Our trip is 2 weeks away (I know, silly to have waited until so close to the trip, but time just got away from me). If I don't hear anything from them, I will look into Children's Furniture Rental like you did. I just don't want to get there and find out I have cribs from both places.

AnnetteF,

I don't think you have to worry; wait another day or so then email ABBF to see if it has a computer error. As I stated, the two times we rented from ABBF we've never had trouble with the cribs -- it was always there when we arrived. It is the *customer service* aspect that we had problems with during our last rental with them. The utter lack of response to this date to different phone calls regarding two separate things during our last trip made me feel they did not care that I was a current or repeat customer and they did not care about me beyond my ability to pay for the then current rental. Even DH feels the same way; he normally leaves all these arrangements to me and this time he also told me we should try another company and spend our money elsewhere. But no one else seems to have had a similar experience. It may be that most folks just rent equipment without problems so they've never had to contact ABBF *during* their vacations the way we did and have to experience ABBF's *customer service* that way.

Scotch, You were right. I got my confirmation e-mail from them today and I feel so much better now. Hope you have a great vacation! :flower:

Wow. You like their product (twice) but not the Customer Service. Hope I never have an 'off day' around you.

We have used ABBF numerous times in the past, and not only do I get a "live person", they are always courteous and helpful, even though I am sure I ask the same questions they have heard a thousand times before. Is it possible they did not get your messages? Is it possible they did return your call and YOU did not get their message? Often times misunderstandings are easily explained without assumming the worst.

As for the batteries, did you think to maybe replace them yourself, and then get a credit for the batteries from them? Because that is exactly what I did on one of our trips. No big deal; batteries go dead with use. I replaced them. Got a refund for more than the cost of the batteries. Everyone was happy.

I guess I am a little more easy going than most. But I also try to realize there are always two sides. ABBF has always provided everything I asked for, clean and waiting for us. They are the best.

Have a great trip.

Is the snide tone really necessary? Geez.

Lucky you. It doesn't make my experience any less true or valid.

I suppose it is possible, but extremely unlikely. I heard their answer messages and I called more than once; with re the airport experience I actually called back twice -- each time I left detailed messages repeating and respelling my names, my cell phone numbers, that I was their customer at OKW, etc. My phone was on pretty much the whole time and we had a working voicemail since we received other messages during that rip. Even if they were too busy to call me they could have emailed me afterwards as they have my email.

Well, nice for you to have done that, but I don't understand why that is the only *right* way to deal with the situation as you are suggesting. We did not have any screwdrivers on hand (and it was needed for the batteries) and yes, we could have checked with housekeeping for a screwdriver, but that should not be necessary. You are right that it is no big deal to encounter a dead battery in a toy; I never said it was. But good customer service would mean responding to my message of disappointment. That is what I would have done if I owned the business.

But I also try to realize there are always two sides. ABBF has always provided everything I asked for, clean and waiting for us.
What could possibly be their other side? Maybe they did not get my one message with re the toy, but not get my subsequent two messages checking on their cribs? I suppose. Glad things worked so well for you in your experience. Again I don't understand why you have to sound snotty about my experience. ABBF did not provide good service to us because they were nonresponsive to my many calls.

They are the best.
Obviously that is not the case due to my experience. The "best" would imply no customer should have enountered the utter lack of response we encountered, even once and that no other rental company in Orlando provides the same service/products/quality. At least right now I've only heard positive things about Children's Furniture Rental so that may be the best.

My apologies, Scotch, I did not intend to sound snide, snotty, or judgemental. My only point was the two sides thing. I hope you have a great experience on this trip.
