We got the Discover back when Sam's Club would take only that card. Now we can use our Mastercard there. We only use the Mastercard for routine expenses, mainly so we can get the reward points, but also so we just have one bill at the end of the month, and not endless checks for groceries, gas, etc. I find myself buying less using the card, as I know DH will go over it with a fine-toothed comb, checking for fraud, (plus we get a year-end statement saying what we spent on dining, gas, travel, etc. Very eye-opening) while if I have cash, I'll spend that like water. We never carry a balance; we don't use the card for actual credit, just convenience.
I would be careful using a debit card online. If your number is swiped, your checking/savings accounts are wiped clean and you have no recourse and will probably never get that money back.
When you use a credit card, you at least have some protection.
And to answer the OP, I have a Visa and my DH has a MC.
DH has a Visa in his name only, pays it off each month. We are about 2/3 of the way to a free cruise on his points.
We have a joint Visa card, paid the balance off today. The only thing that will get charged on it monthly is the Netflix charge.
We have gas cards, we pay those off each month too. And a Penneys card that hasn't been used in a long time, and a Sears card we haven't used in years so I'm not sure if the account is still "open" or not.
I also have a Fashion Bug card that I haven't used in a couple of years, but got a new "privacy notice" from them in the mail yesterday and the interest rate is going to 24.99%! And if they have to mail out a paper bill, it will cost me $1.00 each month. I won't be using that one at all anymore!!
That's actually a bad thing. Using no credit is almost as worst as using too much. Its all about using credit responsibly, and that goes for all forms of credit, revolving, fixed, etc.

Just reposting because this is an important warning. I know 3 people who had their checking and savings account drained (and even worse - one went $15k into "overdraft protection") because they used their debit card online.
I have all the major CCs. I use my AMEX, VISA and Discover regularly, but pay them off every month. As another poster pointed out, not having ANY credit is as bad as having bad credit. I keep them for ease and to maintain my credit score, not to revolve credit.
ETA: DO NOT link Paypal to your checking account either as an alternative. We had several instances of fraud involving PayPal and my husband's chceking account (why he linked it, I don't know). Thankfully PayPal reimbursed what was taken, but don't take the risk!!
