hubby got an email from Best Buy a copy of his receipt for a blue ray play, gummies candy and a video . Hubby didn't buy anything. His Best Buy rewards member number was in there but the credit card last four digits were not familiar. We checked his cards and no match.

He called BB and told them . They told him to check his credit report and he'd have to go I person to the Store because that the o my way they can give him some info.

Hubby ran his credit report and there's a card but it only shows the first numbers but not the last four digits. This card is from 2000 and he hasn't used it. That card has a balance of $500 right now so hubby says they've been using it and paying it of and just got caught but I think they just opened it and the balance will just get bigger.

He went to BB and the only thing they did was printout his last four purchases. They told him he needs to contact credit report or file a police report to get more info. Uugh!

What's the first step file with police or contact credit burea report?? This is our first time dealing with this. Not sure if he contact credit report that the close or stop that card and police won't be able to get info or what? What should we do, what should we expect next?

2nd what's a good company to get that keeps an eye on our credit . I know they charge a monthly or yearly fee. Any recommendations? tia

Call the card company that issue the card is the first thing to do. They should take care of everything. You do not need to contact police or credit bureau unless its a card he didnt open. Credit freeze would help in the meantime too if a credit card is opened in his name without his authorization.

edit: should probably read in detail... haha.

Run All 3 credit reports... if they were to open one, the other 2 credit agency might not receive that info. To get a credit card, they must pull from one of the 3 agencies. Unless its a bank that you have extreme good relationship with. After u find the hard pull, call the credit card company. they should tell u what u need to do. Would also suggest you change your passwords and scan your computer for malware just in case.
As for companies, credit karma is free and u monitor your credit yourself though. Ive been getting free monitorings due to all the hacks but they arent that great. Like i said before, a credit freeze will help if you dont plan on getting more credit cards or mortgage.

UPDATE- Ok on the recipet it just had the last 4 digits and said mastercard. We had no idea what type of mastercard or who to call.

Hubby called credit report and had them check the card info that had the balance. They told him it was CBNA=Citibank 4 first digits tell you what type of account it is. They told hubby it wasn't a credit card its a retail account and it could be jewelry or home Depot. So he checked and it matched up.

He talked to BB person again and told him the unkown card on his credit report turned out to be his home depot which we do have a balance on. Then asked BB to check one more time if they could give him any info before calling police to file report. He asked if they could please just check if the info on the purchase matched his name, just a simple yes or no or nod their head yes/no. Manager said the purchase also included a protection plan so he checked to see if the name it was under matched my husbands. It didn't. So we think when the rewards info popped up sometimes sever names pop up and you verify (which has happened to us) and the person probably clicked the wrong name or didn't pay attention.

So we think it was just an error but will keep an eye on it.

Does anyone use a credit report agency that keeps track and notifies you of any suspicious activity?

The Best buy receipt is what causes all this. My husbands credit report looks fine so fingers crossed
