Credit card fraud at WDW

Naming locations is an exercise in futility and accomplishes nothing. There is no way to know that the person who did it even works there anymore. We had a card used that we had never used and was locked in our safe. The card company said they just randomly test numbers until they get lucky. We have had several hacked but never at Disney.

I just wanted to add my story in here..
We have gone to WDW many times.. Been hit on our disney visa chase twice that coincide with WDW trps in the last 3 years..

Than recently I went to visit my mother.. And got hit AGAIN!
When I called chase, everything went smoothed.. Charges removed and card reorder..

I was informed to be careful using our CC at the airport. So I asked why?
Apparently chase Found a lot of CC numbers being stolen at the airports.
She didn't know any other information but told me she had been I instructed to inform all callers about being careful with thier CC in airports.

Not sure what's going on.. But will be useing cash in the airport next trip..

We stopped using cards at airports if at all possible. We always get hit when we use a card at an airport

ITA. And an Apple Pay feature that I LOVE (and seldom hear or see discussed) is that for every credit card I have associated with Apple Pay I get instantaneous notification of every charge to that card, even those online or autopay. I will know immediately if someone has hacked my account.

We do the same thing. This year, however, I placed a CC on file online and attempt charging with our MB. I already bought a Disney GC though to pay our charges before checkout I'll stick carry a backup CC for emergencies, but I wanna try and see how well this works.

We're using Disney Gift Cards for all of our room charges and park purchases this year.
We bought a bunch of $50.00 ones.
If we have any left over they can be used as Christmas presents.

Credit card fraud can happen any where any time. Once a terminal is comprised they can turn any hotel room key into ur credit card. That is why you always want a strong card from a stron bank like chase or bank of America. Boa will give you credit that night while they investigate. Unless ur obviously lying.
I have had cards in past that won't give you credit at all til solved. Boa also has dummy cards to use online. So smart that usa cards are finally getting the chip.

Btw boa cash rewards card is way better then disney visa.

I was debating not getting my usually Disney Gift Card before my trip next month, but you all have changed my mind. I'm definitely getting a gift card to pay off my room charges.

This is what we do. We bring a couple preloaded Disney cards and pay for what we need with them. A little tricky trying to figure out how much $$ in gift cards we need but it works for us.

Back to to OP, remember many times when your card number gets stolen the thrift posts it on the Internet for sale, along with a bunch of other stolen numbers. So it could have been hacked weeks or months ago and just now got sold.

There are so many ways to have a credit card number compromised. For the most part it isn't the store clerk running out after you charge something. Target, Home Depot had massive issues as most people know. How many small businesses or regional businesses have issues that they aren't even aware of, or they become aware and don't publicize? Ever order online, from your phone, call a local business and order over the phone with a credit card. While I'm sure there are issues at Disney and card data does get stolen, for the most part skimmers and other things done by store employees can and does get noticed pretty quickly. If there are for example a bunch of card numbers being stolen and 90% of the ones in the Orlando area had charged dinner at a restaurant at DTD, a card company can spot that pretty quickly. While I was on my way home from Disney I rec'd a call of a suspicious charge. Someone attempted to use my card in New York State (card in hand) I was in SC at the time and had been in Orlando for a week. There is zero chance that my number was stolen at Disney, sold on the internet, a new card made and sold to another party all in a few days time. More likely it had been compromised weeks or months earlier

I don't have apple pay, but with our chase visa and discover cards, any charge over $50 (we picked the amount) and ANY online or gas purchase, we get text and email. Sure sometimes my phone is beeping a several times a day with alerts, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Twice we had our Disney used only cards copied while at WDW. According to Chase, it happens often at vacation destinations and in the Orlando area. It's just the fact that millions of people visit the area and unfortunately there are people who take advantage of the opportunity. Our stolen card numbers were used locally at gas stations and Wal-Mart's.

At DLR they check Photo ID with EVERY credit card purchase. Whey they don't do this in Florida is beyond me.

Some people get upset when they are ask to show ID, I thank those who ask to see my ID...smjj

IIRC, Visa and MasterCard, after all the recent issues, have told the issuing banks that all cards need to have the chip by EOY.

We have had fraud on our cards 3 times over the last 5 years at Disney. One was Discover, one a Capital One, and not sure what the other was. All happened when there or within a couple days of coming home. We travel alot to other places than Disney and only had it happen once elsewhere--Vancouver airport gas station. We got that alert as soon as plane landed in Atlanta and we turned phone back on.

When did these new cards come? Curious as to if we'll be getting them.

We had our cards replaced in February due to fraud. We'd just gotten back from a weekend trip to a nearby town, though it's more likely it was stolen somewhere else. (I only use my Disney Visa online for Disney charges.) It happens all the time, and that's really why we use CC instead of Debit for travel and most charges around town. Chase contacted us very quickly and the process of notifying them which charges didn't belong to us & getting a replacement was as painless as it could be.

I called Disney to book surfing lessons for my DH. that night Chase called us, someone tried to purchase over $800 at shop.com
I found it very fishy because the guy made me read my card to him 2x and then he read it back. I cant prove anything obviously it is just a scary coincidence.
And wow either everyone uses Chase or thieves like chase cards.

I had fraud last April on a trip to disney... Disney Chase Visa card. I used it THREE times total since I opened the card: 1x Brown Derby in HS for Dinner, 1x Biergarten in Epcot for lunch, and 1x in Downtown Disney at a store for my 10% off a $50 purchase. (Both restaurants offer discounts for use.) I got a call about a Month back about fraud and someone using my card... At both restaurants my card disappeared from my sight, and I firmly believe someone stole my info at one of those locations.

At WDW, I use online check-in so that I can enter my credit card number myself. Then I charge everything to the room. No CMs actually get to see my card. IMO, there is a lot less chance of Disney being hacked and my info being stolen than there is of encountering a dishonest employee somewhere.

I am especially nervous when a server takes my card away and comes back with the bill. Lots of opportunity there to use a skimmer. By charging to my room, that opportunity is gone.

Agreed. The most likely way for a card to get stolen is by an employee, and not just at WDW but everywhere. Use my MB and charge to my room, risk reduced.

A few things on this.....
1st, I'm not a fan of the room charge thing. Using the Magic Bands MAY help cut down fraud, or it may not. Only charges to the bands in your room should show up....but......we all know about Disney IT.

2nd. This is why I do NOT use Debit cards. If you are defrauded with a debit card....this is actual cash money that comes directly from your bank account. Getting it back is EXTREMELY difficult if the bank doesn't catch it first.

3rd. When using your CREDIT card....you are responsible only for charges you make. You can dispute any charge with the bank....but none of your money has been taken. If you dispute a charge....don't pay it. You technically have not had anything taken from you. The bank has. There is enough video surveillance around disney to investigate all purchases if the credit card wanted to pursue it. It's call credit card fraud because it's your credit that is used....not your actual money. It's always on the bank to investigate fraud, not you.

Southern California is the Credit card fraud capital of the world. At DLR they check Photo ID with EVERY credit card purchase. Whey they don't do this in Florida is beyond me.

Personally I only use credit cards because I hate debit....but also for the Reward points. They pay my DVC bill

1. I don't understand not charging to your room. Its more secure and more convenient.

2. This used to be true but no longer is, debit and credit cards have the exact same protections.

Depending on the card issuer and the merchant agreement, it is sometimes (used to be almost always, but changing over time) against the rules for a merchant to ask for photo ID.

All credit cards in the US and terminals must be chip and pin by the end of Oct. Otherwise, issuers and merchants can start being penalized by the CC networks.
