Hosting a sewing party for 10 girls, 10 year olds. They will be hand sewing as we have only one machine!

I would like some fun creative idea's...Can you help? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Here's what I am thinking so far:
I will use the cricut for some decorations, use a yarn type string and hang pieces of fabric (triangle shapes) using clothes pins as a type of garland to further decorate.
Making cookies that look just like buttons that will be placed in the cellophane bags tied with rickrack (spelling?) for them to take home.

Maybe a guess the number of buttons in a jar?
Would like a simple but fun game (not bingo pls) but maybe passing something????

Thinking of tote type bags? It'll have to be fairly simple (and I can use the machine to re-enforce the seams??)
Maybe we should try something else?
We can make patterns out of paper shopping sacks for each of the girls. We'll have them pin it to the material and then cut it out.
The material will already be in squares large enough, rather than having them pick a fabric and then cut it off the yardage. .
I think we are going to have to have the handle (a strip of material that will have been turned inside out and then sewed and pressed ahead of time). They'll attach it to the inside. ???? Just not so sure they'll be able to be successful and thats a goal!
Do you think we should try something else???
I think the party will last 3 hours, with 20-minutes or so for pizza/drink.
Cupcakes for dessert? Some type of "sewing" theme??

I saw adorable pin cushion made with a plastic detergent top, but thats not really sewing, which is what the birthday girl really wants....
I am a bit overwhelmed!! I just need to be very organized, both before the party with prep and during it. I will have two other moms helping out if needed.
Okay, any Idea's, Help, Suggestions???? Thanks very much!!!!!

I got an idea on here for a bag made out of old tee shirts. If you are interested I will try to send it to you. I am going to use it with my girl scouts

Oh yes, that'd be great....I'd love to see it!!! Thanks!

All you need is a t-shirt, a sewing machine, and some scissors. And actually, you could hand-stitch this if you do not have a sewing machine.

Directions
1. Turn the t-shirt inside out
2. Pin together the bottom edge hems of the t-shirt.
3. Sew together the 2 hemmed edges of the t-shirt. Double stitch for extra strength.
4. Turn the t-shirt right side out.
5. Cut out the neckline in a semi-circle shape. This will be the opening through which you put items inside of the bag.
6. Cut off the 2 sleeves of the t-shirt.
7. Viola! Your very own t-shirt bag!

I can't get the picture to come up but this is the instructions

Is this a birthday party- at our parties we always used something to represent the party (a sewing cushion would be good) and passed it to music (like hot potato) and whomever ended with the item - that was the gift we opened- there were always a few extra gifts (from mom and dad and such in case someone didn't bring a gift or their wer siblings who brang only one gift- it made gift opening time more fun for everyone.

Also you could do a game where you put sewing related items on a tray and try to remeber as many of them as possible.

You could get items (praticularly sewing related) and put them in a bag and have each girls feel for 1 minute and write down what she thinks is in the bag- the winner is the one who has the most right.

Love the game with the "missing items!"

Will pass on the gift opening idea, I think she will be opening after everyone leaves. But that also sounds fun.

I LOVE those yo yo's and also found another type "flower" where it is simply a long piece of material (you fray the edge) then you make some long stitches and gather and tie the two ends, adorable and easier sewing, so they can make a few! I'll have the strips pre-cut, just for time factor.

I am going to research the t-shirt bag a bit more, thanks! I'd like to "see it".

Thank you all for the idea's, feel free to keep them coming...:grouphug:

Have a look here for some ideas www.yellowmoon.org.uk
(you probably won't want to order due to postage and the time it takes;)) They do cute cushions, puppets etc. made of pre-cut felt with the sewing holes ready punched and some self-adhesive shapes to stick on (so a bit of sewing but not so much they can't get finished:goodvibes) - you could probably replicate that if you can get some felt at a good price.

I taught a sewing class that was all hand sewing. One of the easier projects was a simple autograph pillow. The size can be as large or as small as you think the girls would like. They can sew three and a half sides, leave an opening for the stuffing, stuff and sew the opening closed. You could get fabric pens, and let the girls use their imagination.

Hi everyone!
Wanted to thank you for your Wonderful party idea's.

We decided to do a tote bag project with the girls. Since some are scouting and will also take a Home Ec class, I wanted to try something a bit different. They will be making a pillow or already have, in other places.
So, we got tote/canvas bags, which I then tie dyed with a green pattern.
Then we purchased felt in brown (for a tree limb) and blue felt (for a bird). The girls will each be sewing with embroidery thread along the edges of the tree branch and the bird which makes them pop, with the contrasting floss. We'll use the fabric glue to attach.
We are also sewing flowers (yo yo type and another I found on Youtube) and attach those to our totes as well.
They look quite adorable and can actually be used, rather then tossed in a closet somewhere, lol! They look very Earth friendly with the theme and color!
We are going to play the guessing game listed above (Thank you) and also the "how many buttons in a jar". Having some lite dinner food.
Sending the girls home with their handmade totes, cookies in the shape of buttons in those gift bags, tied with rick rack and a small tag saying thank you for coming to the party (of course sending personalized thank you's later). They will match the invites which were laden with (you guessed it) pretty buttons!
The decorations include yarn strung with pieces of fabric clothes pinned across the room, coordinated balloons and table ware and such. Each table has a sewing box with a huge tissue paper flower and some pretty yarn attached. The center piece for Display is the childs name (made three dimensional) in a rectangle container that now has Paper Button Cut outs, and then decorated with yarn, thread, a tape measure, and other sewing notions ;)
Looks like we are in pretty good shape, just have to cut all the strips of material for the girls to choose from and then decorate it all just before arrival.
Figured I would share our idea's and perhaps someone else will want to host the same type of party. Again, thanks for the idea's and inspiration.:flower3:
