creationism v evolution in the classroom

My biology teacher gave us that option when we began studying Darwin. She told us that if it bothered us enough that we needed to leave, we could go sit in the hallway and read. We would have to be responsible for his theories for tests, of course, but we didn't have to sit through the class and learn the details. I'm a believer of evolution, though, so I had no problem with it and it was AP Biology so everybody in the class was the type of person who can learn about a theory they don't believe in without having to protest.

We learn about all ancient religions in World History and Cultures (we start with Egyptian, then Norse, Greek, Roman, Cristianity, Judaism, Muslim, then Buddhism, Taoism, Confucism and so on) to better understand a culture/region. The only ones we didn't really touch on were South American/Native American beliefs, but we covered those more closely in American History (I took AP) so that we could better understand the conflicts between Natives and eastern explorers.

I can see how tests and such would be a problem when learning about evolution and such, so being responsible for that information makes sense. I just think it's a good idea that the option to leave the room is put out there at least.

I think there is a big difference between being taught creationism in science and being taught about other religions in Social Studies. It may not be what you believe, but it's important to learn about other religions and to keep an open mind. And religion was a huge part of history. In order to learn what you need to know in history, you'll have to be taught about other religions. There's pretty much no way out of that.

I think there is a big difference between being taught creationism in science and being taught about other religions in Social Studies. It may not be what you believe, but it's important to learn about other religions and to keep an open mind. And religion was a huge part of history. Then shouldn't everyone learn about different views on how we came to be then? If you're saying we should learn about different religions, then we should also learn about different beliefs on creationism and evolution as well.

Well I think in history you need to learn the basics about other religions to understand major things that happened. I do think we should be taught about creationism, but not in science. I'm not 100% sure about this, but is there anything scientific about creationism? Sorry I think in my other posts I ment to say "in science class". Like...it is important to learn about all religions, just not in science. For some reason I thought that by in the classroom they ment science class.
It's late, I'm having trouble putting words together, lol. I hope that made sense.

I am a christian, but I love anything to do with time travel. have you considered (if you believe in creation) what if TIME itself was a created thing?

I TOTALLY commend ALL of you on your debate of a sensitive issue. you all seem like intelligent, sensitive, THINKING teens, and you can debate WITHOUT arguing. I wish a lot of the "adult" threads were as mature.

teacher: "ok class, we're going to hold a debate!"
class: "ugh.............."

I think when it comes to the Earth, and how people came to be, it's considered science. And one view is creationism and the other is evolution. They're two things that people believe and are both scientific IMO. So it should be taught in science along with evolution.

Sorry I was confused, I was thinking creationism was strictly a religious thing. My apologies.
I personally think there should be a religion class. I'm not in high school yet, is there an option to take a class like that?

It's mainly religious people who believe creationism. However it's still science, you know what I mean? There's gotta be a few views on how we came to be and that just happens to be one of them.
Not sure, I'm not in HS either. But I don't think there is. Only in religious schools.

Nobody's views are actually proven, so it doesn't really make sense just to teach one.
Oh. I think that would be a pretty neat class. But maybe if there was a choice to take it.

Well at my old high school, you could tell that when a teacher was trying to make a point, that they didn't lean one way or another. I had another teacher say to me that evolutionism, is a theory just like creationism. I mean yeah, microevolution exists, but please dont tell me that a stick laying in the middle of the field is turn into a house someday. Complete BS.

However, on the other side, one might say that how could a creator 'god' create something so majestic? I have heard that one before.

Not all of science is facts. In fact, alot of it isn't. I mean, we believe (well for the majority) what is written in a biology text book, so why can't it be the same for the bible and creationism?
