I have been stalking for some time. I have a question if we purchased resale at the beginning of the year and all goes well and we close end of February beginning of March2018 . Do u think we would be able to find availablity the end of July / August for a trip 2018 or am I completely crazy. I would need 2 studios. I am a teacher and I have to vac over the summer. Please tell me my dreams of trip won’t be crushed for this year.

Where would you be looking to stay?

July/August is high travel season which is low DVC demand season. The prospects of getting into 2 studios at SSR, or OKW at the 5-month mark is much different than VGF, but if you are resort agnostic, you should be fine getting something somewhere.

Right, SSR and OKW would be very likely. You might could even score something at the AKV. Not sure about the Poly, maybe?

Thanks so much for your responses. I would love an Epcot resort but honestly I am in Disney withdrawal right now I would take any resort lol poly is not our fav at all, bad experience there most likely would never stay there again. Honestly any would do at this point. I'm afraid if I tie our money up in a resale I don't want to loose out on a trip over the summer. I am desperate for a Disney trip lol

Buying resale is a trade-off between money and time. If you buy direct, you can get the points today, and get your guide to help you make that first reservation. If you go resale, you are saving money at the expense of waiting several months for your points.
My advice is to let time be your friend. Don’t set a deadline in hopes of a near-term trip. Take your time, get educated, follow the pricing through the ROFR thread and on the OC website. You might even try some different resorts, or at least visit them.
Then, when the right contract comes along, you will be ready to act.

I think you could get something at SSR. I would go ahead and go with it.

Yeah I think every time I have looked I have seen availability at SSR for short notice trips. Worse case you end up with multiple partial stays at different resorts or you could book a backup trip offsite (or maybe at Dolphin)

You should be able to get something that will work, either 2 studios or a 2 BR esp at SSR/OKW but likely at AKV as well. But be prepared just in case you can't.

I have been going back and forth for so many years on whether to buy or not to buy. I think the price increase is really pushing me to bite the bullet. We have been many time and I have done all my research. Like I said my biggest worry is availablilty short term. We haven’t taken a trip in a few years because we wanted to wait until our little guy was at least 2 ish. I finally said that’s it. Why spend $4000 just on a room let’s put that cash right on a resale down payment. Enough already but we really really need a trip this summer. I can’t stay away another year and short trips just aren’t worth it when we live in ct. thanks for the info. I trust my dis friends .

For a one time option I think the chances of getting something as described is good but I wouldn't buy at all if you're routinely going to be 5-6 months out reserving.

Oh no no no, we always plan a year ahead of time. We were definitely going this summer without fail right Our older two kids bday as a surprise for them. I threw a wrench in our plans when I said forget this lets buy a contract instead of throwing our cash every year on single vacations. If you add up what we have spent in 11 years on our vacations I probably could have over 500 points at this point lol. It took a little to get my husband on board with xmas. I just thinking long term. Prices keep going up I rather have a room paid for with points and just worry about tickets & food. In the future I will add on with a small points contract direct to get the benefits for park tickets. But not right now.

While you could have saved a fair amount of money by buying back when, that pails in comparison to making a poor choice for many.

Yes, it is better to have spent the money and gotten something in return (in this case, nice hotel rooms) than it would have been to have spent the money on DVC and not end up using it, getting nothing in return.
I, too, have stayed at Disney in hotel rooms multiple times over the past 10 years. Probably $10k+ worth. I do not regret it, though, as I got some unique accommodations and am not confident that I will continue going to Disney for many more years to come.

Just looking at the last week of July (which is within the 7-month window) every resort has some sort of availability for a full week. SSR and Kadini have availability for every single room type for that full week. I know availability can and will slowly dry up as we get closer, but if your closing timeframe happens I think you'll have a good chance at getting something that works.

I am just considering the long picture. Knowing that with out fail we are planning a trip each year until God knows when lol. Thinking about the price increases, with Star Wars land and Toy story I think now is the best time to make the plunge. My husband laughed when he said are we really going to Disney when we are 73 years old. Me- laughing if I have my way we will if not our kids can.

I agree with you. I signed up for 43 more years at 33 years old and plan to use them all. My kids think that Disney World is a given in the summer, so I think they are locked in lifers. I consider it to be a good investment, but am not kicking myself too hard for not making it earlier.

Are you aware that only Polynesian studios connect to another studio? If you are trying to put kids in one side, adults in the other or adding Grandparents, at every other resort, studios will only connect to one bedroom villas. Or be dedicated and not connect to any other unit.

Please don't laugh but we are that "one" family, we hated our stay at the poly. I love the resort, it was gorgeous, but we just had one silly thing happen after another on top of a ton of house keeping issues that the more we complained to the front desk the worse it got. Mind u we book 2 rooms when we stay because my mom comes too so it was both rooms, we vowed that it will be a long time b4 we stay again. I am so happy that I can say we did stay there, I feel I got it out of my system in a sense. I feel like Disney " lifers" have to at least say they stayed at the poly just once. But not again. Lol funny thing is I have a dvc member that checks in every so often to see if we r ready to buy direct. He pushes me to buy poly every time he calls, me - ya no thanks lol. He thinks I'm nuts

While likely successful, connecting studios cannot be guaranteed.

We stayed at the Polynesian in 1997 in Moorea and it was fine then. Two queen beds, a real twin sized day bed, smaller bathroom, but lots of space in the room. When this building was converted to DVC, they took a lot of the living space and converted it to the extra shower and kitchenette leaving a lot less space in the living area. I'd never buy Polynesian because we usually stay in one bedroom villas and there are none there, just the cramped studios (though the sq ft is greater than most of the other studios) and the bungalows with only two real beds for eight people.
