When I eat fresh peaches, I never peel them.. If I have a need for peeled peaches, I'll buy canned peaches..

However, I have a recipe for an unusal peach pie and I'm assuming it requires fresh peaches based on the list of ingredients - ie: 8 large peaches cut in halves.. (The halves are then layed cut-side down - on top of some ingredients previously placed in the uncooked pie shell and then topped off with some additional ingredients..)

So - how do you "peel" a fresh peach? Wouldn't it get all soft and mushy while you're peeling it? Would they be easier to peel if they were cold?

Like I said, it's a crazy question - but I have never, ever "peeled" a peach..LOL..

Anyone? :upsidedow

I have only peeled peaches once. I was making peach jam, and the recipe I had suggested treating them like tomatoes: Boil a pan of water, cut x
s in the ends of the peach, and dip the peach in the water for just a minute, then plunge it into cold water and the skin will peel off. It worked great.

Nope. It's really not difficult to peel a peach. You just need a sharp knife. Sometimes it helps to score the peel into segments. Peel them over a bowl to catch the juice.

Halve them first, then take a paring knife and just grab the edge of the peel from the cut half with the knife and pull. If it doesn't come off cleanly in strips (it'll depend on how ripe the peaches are), just slice off thinly with the knife.

If your peaches would smush with a peeler they may be overripe though, which is fine but I'd add a bit less sugar in your recipe to compensate, heh.

I personally wouldn't blanch peel them (the boiling water method) because you THEN have to halve them and the outer meat may be mushier and it could just end up a mess.

I would blanch them like I do tomatoes for canning. Pour boiling water over a pan of them, stick a fork in one and peel it quickly with a paring knife. The boiling water will loosen the peel but (not cook the peach) and the skin will come right off. DOn't put too many peaches in the pan at atime or you will start to cook the out layer of peach flesh as they will sit in the boiling water too long before you get a chance to peel them all.

I have a peach tree in my backyard. LOVE peaches. And I never peel them either!!!

When I do need to peel them, I just peel up a piece of the skin and pull, it comes right off!!! But not in one piece. Mine don't get mushy doing this unless they are REALLY ripe.

Hope this helps you!!!

Thanks all! I knew I could count on getting some answers here..:thumbsup2

I'll buy a couple of extras and try both ways to see which works easiest for me..
:flower3:

I wish I could just used the canned halves, but I have a feeling the pie would come out too mushy that way..

When I get around to trying the recipe, I'll share it here - if it turns out decent!! ;)

I bought a serrated peeler last year and it's perfect for all sorts of odd peels like kiwi, plum and tomato, peaches too I'd imagine. I don't see them too often but you can find them on Amazon.

Peaches are actually quite easy to peel...but they have to be ripe! You just start pulling up and it peels off on its own.

I grilled the last of the peaches at our hosue tonight. mmmm!

I use the blanching method when I need peeled peaches too. Works great.

It is healthy to eat fruit.
Peaches are known in China, Japan, Korea, Laos, and Vietnam, not only as a popular fruit, but also for the many folk tales and traditions associated with it, such as the Peaches of Immortality.
