Crazy Kindle Deal

I was so excited to receive a Kindle for my birthday. My sister purchased the original Kindle with the Wifi for $150. I really wanted the touch, so we went back to return that one and preorder the new version. I decided that I didn't need the Wifi, so I ordered the touch with just the wifi which was only $100. When you preordered at Best Buy, you put a $50 deposit till it comes in and no tax. So while we r doing all that the guys says that we get a $50 gift card for preordering and can pay the balance with that when it comes in. So we got the new Kindle Touch for only $50!!!! I thought that was a crazy deal, and I was also glad to save my sister $100 from her original purchase!

That is a good deal.

Hope it works out though. The "pre-order" for the iPad 2 with Best Buy was a fiasco. They really messed it up and ran a lot of people through the ringer (including me).

Are you sure that the $50 deposit didn't become the $50 gc you received. I thought this offer sounded a little too good to be true, and when I googled for more info it sounds like you are just holding the deposit in the form of a gc, so the cost of the Kindle is not reduced in any way.

We returned the original Kindle for a refund. My sister paid $50 on her CC for the deposit on the new one. The clerk handed her a $50 gift card. She has a balance of $49 when she picks up the new Kindle, and she can use the $50 gift card for that and still have $1 left. I don't think that it was advertised anywhere, in fact, I was originally a little perturbed that they didn't mention the gift card deal for placing a pre-order when my sister bought the old Kindle originally.

anyone have anymore information on this or know how long it is good for?

Well, I had a similar deal with my ipad at BB but I had to purchase a $100 gift card as a "deposit." I could then use that $100 GC towards my $650 total price.

I think this may be the same......the deposit you put down was to purchase the GC and the $100 kindle will still be $100......your $50 gc plus another $50.

I would love to be wrong.

Yep, not a deal... unless the associates at your local Best Buy get confused and process the preorders incorrectly. That has been known to happen.

Here's how the program is supposed to work:

You walk into Best Buy today and pay $50 to reserve a Kindle. Best Buy does not actually apply that $50 toward the purchase price of the Kindle though.

Instead they give it back to you in the form of a $50 gift card. You are free to use the gift card on anything you like immediately OR you can hold onto it, bring it back, and apply it toward the price of the Kindle when you pick it up.

The key point is that while having a preorder reserves a Kindle in your name, it does not reduce the cost of the Kindle when you pick it up. You will be charged full retail + tax just like everyone else.

Yes, you can apply the $50 preorder gift card toward the price of the Kindle, but since you paid $50 to get it, no savings there.

If you change your mind and don't get the Kindle or return it for some reason, you will not get the $50 back in cash since gift cards are non-refundable.

Boy, they are smart. They're keeping your $50 no matter what.

So this is not a good deal then? I want to pre-order a kindle touch but I am not sure where to pre-order it from. Is there any advantage to pre-ordering it from best buy? Ort should I just wait and see what deals pop up as it gets closer to shipping time?

Jen.

It's not a deal. You paid $50 for a gift card. The gift card is your deposit. When you pickup the Kindle, you owe the full $100, $50 of which can come from the gift card.

The $50 deposit gift cards, unlike others, are refundable.

We put a $50 deposit on the $99 kindle, we received a $50 gift card which we cn apply to the balance, so we paid only $50 for the $99 Kindle!!!!

Unfortunately, no, that is not the case. You received the gift card in exchange for the $50 deposit, not in addition to. You owe $49 balance when you pick up the item.

Thank you for the correction. That's not as bad as I thought. :thumbsup2

And when we pick up the Kindle, we can use the gift card for the balance, so there is only $50 out of pocket expense for then $99 kindle!!! The receipt says the balance is $50!

No, there is not! You owe $49 on the Kindle. Best Buy, with all deposits, returns the deposit in the form of a gift card when you make the deposit. if you don't want to believe me, fine. I guess you'll figure that out when Best Buy asks you for the full $99 when you pick it up.

If the PAID for the first $50 (gift card)
and you PAID $50 additional, PLUS the $50 GC, you PAID $100 overall.

Did the first $50 for the GC not come out of your wallet?

No...she only PAID $50.....she paid $50 for a GC....her receipt says she still owes $49 on the kindle....she uses her $50 GC to pay the $49 ...so only $50 out of pocket

The above quote says she PAID an additional $50 which she did NOT..so she has not PAID $100 overall

Ok, well, if the OP is correct in her understanding of the deal, then I will stand corrected, but from what I know of BB and from what I am reading online, she is mistaken.
