I'm just curious - how many of us HAVE to stop in Japan to pick out an oyster, watch the process and create jewelery? Even as a gift? I love going and picking out what I think is just the right oyster - and see the pearl pop out!

Anybody get a record pearl?

Can you tell me more of how it works? This is one of those things I haven't gotten around to learning yet.

We do this every trip. Love it!! By record, do you mean size? Our largest has been 7 1/2. We saw one person on our last trip end up with two from one oyster. Trip before we saw someone get a black pearl. We've not been that lucky....not yet anyways. :rolleyes1

In Epcot - the Japan pavilion has a place inside the store - and for $14ish you can buy an oyster. They open it - and they see how big it it. Could bring in drumroll if it is large and then have silver of gold findings you can mount or put the pearl in.
Fun for adults - not sure about kids.

I just heard about doing this, and now I want to check it out! It sounds like so much fun :)

JEALOUS!! :rolleyes2 So much fun to hope for the winning pearl! :yay: I know one of mine was big enough for the drumroll - but where is the number? I've lost one more thing. Plus - only white pearl - oh I would love a purple or black pearl.

Sounds like a fun idea. At one of the water parks there was a booth with pearls/jewerly. I really didn't pay a lot of attention. Is this the same thing or something different?

Mine was 7.25mm, but we saw someone there with a 9mm!

Yes, the booths are available in other WDW places, but I would only go to Japan because the CM is so great-she's half the fun of getting one!:goodvibes

I have actually never tried it- I didn't know about it and I just found out a couple weeks ago. I defintely plan on going during my honeymoon because I love pearls, everything in our wedding is accented in pearls, and it just sounds so great! I would love to hear more to! Is there a website or anything on it? :confused3

My big one is a 8mm - ergo the drum roll. These are fresh water pearls, so the easy pricing. You buy a ticket - they call your number - you pick out an oyster - they open it - and depending on size or color - you get a drum roll.

I've not seen any website giving out much more than that for information. The trick is to get you to buy the jewelry finding for your pearl. :lmao: You do not need to have it set there in you don't want to.

I can't walk past without begging for one more. :rotfl:

This is a must do for us each trip! We have picked some awesome pearls before! I picked out a big green pearl which is awesome, then my brother picked out a beautiful blueish greyish pearl. I love them!

Do some of the oysters NOT have pearls in them? Also, how is the quality of the pearls you get?

I think the quality is quite good for fresh water pearls. Mine are nice and round, like the sea water ones, just not as much $$. Plus you can get luck and find an oyster with a pearl with colors. I would think if the oyster was to be empty - then you would pick out another oyster. :cloud9:

And Japan's presentation is way better then the kiosks, which try to push you into something you might not want. the kiosks are third party, I think, and don't have to bend to all the nice WDW rules. Japan gives you back you pearl in a bag - then you look at the findings to see if you want something. They might hurry you - but that is because someone is waiting behind you. VERY POLITE!:dance3:

We got ours I picked out one for my DGF and it was twins, and they were "Blue!"

We have been doing this with our DD starting with her first visit to the World when she was 14months old.I told my wife when we get enough of them to make a necklace so when she gets older and wears it.....the memories she has of going to WDW will make her smile.....and remind her how much her parents love her...........one problem is we didn't start doing it with our 2nd DD yet :confused3 and shes been there 3 times.

DD was very lucky during our xmas stay she had twins come out of one oyster......:woohoo:

What are the prices of the settings? As far as a range?

I paid for my daughter to do this for her 13th birthday, and I remember the ring setting she picked out (sterling) was between $50 - 70 IIRC. I didn't think the pricing was bad at all, and watching her do it was so much fun!!!

This sounds like something very personal that i could do with my daughter. Her first trip was in 2001 & she had just turned 3, but i think i will start doing this with her this fall when we go.
