A friend of mine has her car on craigslist and she got the following reply she is wondering if it seems legitimate or not. She says it feels fishy but she's never sold anything on there before.

Thanks for the swift reply. I am still interested in buying, I am satisfied with the conditions because i read thru the AD,I am on leave in office presently so i will be making my payments with a U.S Bank Certified Check or money order..I will be responsible for the pick up when check clears.I will add $50 to your asking price for you to hold the item for me.. please get back to me with the following information so that the payment can be endorsed:

Name to be on the check.
Address to mail the payment to (No P.O Box)
City, state and zip code..
Phone number both land and mobile.

More so, the shipping funds will be included on the payment and you will get the money send to the shipping company when the check clear from you account.. After the information is been supplied,I will give you an update on the payment.. I will be highly grateful if you can withdraw the AD from craigslist and make me your favorite buyer.

Regards
Paul

NO NO NO!!! I think when you first list a car on Craigslist, it tells you that offers to have it shipped and such are things to look for in a scam. For me I would want cash and carry! Good Luck to your sis!

It's already been said, but it bears repeating - it's a SCAM! Run away, run far away from this offer.

Yes, its a scam! My husband had this pop up when he tried to sell a car a few years ago and the reponse was worded almost the exact same way!

Thanks I knew I could count on you. I let her know and told her to say its cash only and the buyer has to pick it up.

Definitey a scam! When we had my husbands truck on the KC craiglist this was one of the first responses we got.

The usage of poor grammar within a paragraph that details such an intricate transaction should yell.....

SCAM

Not only is this a scam, but it's not even a new one. I worked as a bank teller about 3 years ago when we were educated on this scam just incase customers brought in checks for deposit and shared some of the story behind the money. Good job looking into this.

Bogus!! She should respond with, "I am reporting you to Craig's List!" This is not legit!

Craigslist sales = CASH ONLY

And for me, they also include small bills only (although I have never sold anything like a car so that would be tough), they must provide me with a valid cell phone number and the town they are coming from, and I only meet them in a public place to complete the transaction. You can't be too careful.

UMMM.... SCAM!?!?!?!? How could anyone think that is legit? NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO... I get these emails all the time... even about baby clothes!!!

It's probably too late now, but I would say DO NOT REPLY at all. Just delete it. I replied to an iffy email once and now I get tons of spam...

The fact that your friend even had to ASK you about the email tells me that they CLEARLY didn't bother to read the warnings that appear ALL OVER Craigslist about these 'shipping' SCAMS.

This is just a reminder people -- ACTUALLY READ the sites CAREFULLY! So few bother to actually read the warnings anymore because 'they know better', then wonder why they fall for scams.

My dad got a similar something trying to sell the car. He actually accepted the offer, then took the check (when rec'd) to cash it. I can't remember if it was flagged at the bank or at Western Union. Fortunately, he was stopped before money was transferred to the other people. The FBI wound up involved with it -- the check was written on some bogus bank of Nigeria.

I agree with the PP: cash only and must be picked up in person.

I can't believe people still fall for online scams, it truly amazes me. COMMON SENSE is all that is needed people

When I was selling my minivan 6 years ago I got an offer (right away) asking me if the minivan was still available (Duh, ad was just posted:confused3) saying they had a client who wanted my exact model, etc. Problem was they only had a cashier's check for an amount a couple thousand more than I was asking.

So their solution was they would give me the cashier's check and I would give them my van and the couple thousand dollars difference in a personal check. They would give me a few hundred extra for my trouble.

Well since I'm not stupid my response to the email was basically "Yes, the vehicle is still available and if this is a legitimate offer please contact me again. However, I will only accept cash, no checks of any kind" I never heard back from them, of course!

This is such a scam. They will get your car and a personal check for the difference between your asking price and their cashier's check. Then the cashier's check will bounce (since it's not valid) and you will not only be out your car but also the money you gave them since the cashier's check won't come back as invalid until after your check has cleared.

I did sell my car a few months later, for cash, to a very nice man and his wife.

I have sold several items on craiglist and if the item is more than about $100, I have gotten one of these emails. Now I just ignore them.

They only reason these scams work is people get greedy and think they are getting away with something. If it sounds too good to be true, then it is! People still fall for the old Nigerian Gold Scam.

Many people don't know that cashier's checks aren't guaranteed. They can be fraudulent and bounce.
