Craigslist-- do you think this could be for real?

Never trust a Craiglist e-mail where they do not state the item you have for sale. The message you posted just refers to "item". That's the first red flag and just delete e-mail. If you reply to them then they have your e-mail address.
 
Of course this was 100% a scam as you found out.

Just the fact that you even considered that this might be real shows you how so many people are fooled by this type of scam.

Another red flag - the poor English.
 
I have gotten that exact same response SEVERAL times when I have listed something on CL. I don't have any proof that it is a scam, but it made me feel weird so I just ignored it. When it happened the second time (on a different item) I knew I did the right thing. What are the chances?! I just don't trust anything like that. Good luck.
 
You really have to weed through Craig's list responses. So many are fishy.
 

I would not do it. I work for a bank and we see craigslist scams like this on a daily basis.
