Cracker Barrel adds Impossible meatless sausage - some customers go apoplectic

^^ I agree and the trendy term 'plant based' is mostly used as a marketing gimmick. Potato chips are also 'plant based' and I have yet to see anyone consider them a healthy food.

It kind of reminds me of back in the 90s when "fat free" was the nutritional marketing fad du jour. I remember laughing at my "healthy" snack one day when we stopped at the gas station after school, because the boxes of SweetTarts and Nerds had a happy little "fat free" banner across the corner, but I'm sure someone, somewhere probably did think that tiny little balls of pure sugar were a better choice than a chocolate-and-nut candy or even a package of jerky because of that label.

There were a ton of buzzwords over the years.

I remember when saturated fat and/or tropical oils were the big enemy and items were labeled as being low in those, even though they might use hydrogenated oils. There was some study about the benefits of oat bran, and that became the latest fad. Then red wine. There will always be the next fad.

What won't be a fad is a balance to everything. I don't believe that there should be anything that is to be absolutely avoided (other than maybe smoking) but anything else in moderation.

This is all part of a large segments identity. They feel offended by just about anything, even if it effects them in no way….

Unfortunatly , they vote and are making many laws regarding things that they have nothing to do with…..

Just cause they do not like it themselves, so no one can like it either.
Ain’t that the truth.

Edit to add: Yay Kansas!

I would agree with you, if they simply added a plant-based option to the menu--let the customer decide, everyone else is being whiny crybabies.

However, if they removed turkey sausage and replaced it with this--customers have a right to complain. It's kind of like Coke switching formulas, back in the day. (Now I'm dating myself!)

The whole "plant-based diet" terminology is meant to invoke not vegetarianism, but reduction of the share of meat products in one's diet.

Marketing, sure enough, meant to encourage a sort of vegetarian-lite lifestyle that would be achieved by eating more products that have heretofore been purchased only by vegetarians.

I didn’t look into it, but I’m guess the “Plant Based Rice” I posted is vegetable matter processed to look like grains of rice with much fewer carbohydrates than real rice.

One of the most ridiculous label claims I ever read was for Heinz vinegar back around 30 years ago. “Not made from Petroleum.”

Has ANY vinegar or substitute EVER been derived from petroleum products?

The US is super polarized. This doesn't surprise me in the least. Some actively want to destroy the planet. Of course, climate change might get them first.

It's 97% water with a gluten-free non-rice powder mixed in...it's not food, but I guess if you can't have rice and want to remind yourself why that's okay, it's a decent food to keep you off the rice habit...

We buy "Riced Cauliflower". But it is clearly labels that way.

As for vinegar made from petroleum, yes it can be made from petroleum, apparently. https://chefcynthialouise.com/pickles-petroleum-and-your-gut-health/#:~:text=In short, it is true, convert the alcohol to vinegar.
