Crabs in our swimming pool - BIG UPDATE!!! #76

It's the new thing. Saltwater pools require fewer chemicals and don't have as many algae problems.

I read about this too. Suppose to be healthier, right? I've also been reading about "natural" swimming pools....Where you just let nature takes it's course. We have those around here....we call them ponds :rotfl:

Seriously, I've been looking into putting in a pool and these natural swimming pools even have catails and pond grass growing in them! The biological "filter" is suppose to keep it clean. Can you imagine the critters swimming along side you in something like this:

Hm...let's see, fewer chemicals or a crapload of crabs swimming along side me?
Hm............I'll take chemicals please. :lmao:

Hey, this is just such a crabby thread. Lighten up folks.....no need for all the crabbing here!! ;)

Wait, let's invited my DH to this thread! He fits right in with the CRABS!!!:rotfl:

Those are beautiful! But, I don't know that I could swim in it, it's just too natural for me ;) . It makes me feel kinda slimey just thinking about it.

The pictures look neat but honestly........I mean REALLY........

if I want to swim in a big ol' mudpuddle filled with cattails......

I'll just find the nearest mudpuddle filled with cattails and swim in that. Don't really like the idea of purposely creating a mosquito and leech infested swimming hole to swim in in my very own back yard, ya know?
I guess I'm not very earthy am I? :hippie:

Trust me after swimming in the chunky green(pea soup green) lake I'd take the pond any day!!

I see swimming pools like these at work all the time. They're called foreclosures.

have you considered arming yourself with a large stock pot, a nut cracker and a stick of butter?

And garlic. We must not forget the garlic. The butter just isn't the same without it. :rotfl:

We've got nasty, stinging yellow flies that nothing seems to kill. Does that count??

Actually, they have gotten better lately. Guess the crabs scared them away!

I used to live in Destin, and I remember those flies! I'll take the Texas State Bird, a.k.a., the mosquito any ol' day! Those suckers hurt! :scared1:

:lmao:

My mom and dad have a pool they haven't opened in two years. It is WAY beyond natural!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl:

Usually the ones I see are so black, and they have frogs and turtles swimming in them!

I'm working with this one female investor, and we always walk by them and sound like such girls. We get the heebie-jeebies so bad, and we're squealing as we go past them. You almost expect the creature from the black lagoon to come lurching out of them. :scared1:

Make some crabby patties and wear this when you serve them....You will be the cool mom on the block.

Well, as of this morning, there were only 7 left in the pool. DH got them out and took them all back down to the lake. I just went out there a few minutes ago, and there were none to be found. We'll see what happens tonight.

You guys are having way too much fun with my dilemna!! ;)

I, on the other hand, am by myself tonight. DD is away at camp, DS and DH went to the races, and I would dearly LOVE to hang out in my pool in peace. Think I'll be out there??? -- NO WAY!!! You should have seen me just trying to get a picture of one of those little boogers last night. He moved, I screamed, DH -

Uh, pretty - but no way!!! I don't even want to think about how many snakes could be in that thing if it were in my backyard!!!

Speaking of snakes, the little baby one I saw yesterday - well, my dog found him today. Wasn't a pretty picture!! Good news - definitely a garter snake though. Bad news - DD's favorite little green tree frog that loves to hang out in our deck box was his last meal! She's going to be so upset when she finds out.

turn a negative into a positive-sell tickets to people so they can 'swim with the crabs'-or- put on the sound track to the little mermaid, put a rubber raft in the pool and market it to kids as 'sebastian's under the sea adventure' (you can't tell me that some sahm with kids already bored and driving her crazy would'nt shell out a few bucks for this):lmao:
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: You guys are killing me here!

If one of you don't get a new tag from this thread, then the tag fairy is definitely on vacation!

Well, it's not the salt water pool that's attracting them. Last night we only had 1 lone little crab that showed up. Well, DH just came back in from talking with our next door neighbor. They have been up all morning getting the, are your ready for this, getting the 72 crabs out of their pool!!! And they've got a regular chlorine pool!! I'm no longer complaining - I'll take my little lone crab anyday!!

She did say that this had never happened before - they've lived on this lake for 10 years. She said they have friends in South Florida who told them this year has been a strange year and that they are all over the place down there. Any of you South Floridians been seeing them??

I didn't put two and two together yesterday, but we had a scene out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie with major birds out back by the lake. DH said when he went out there today that there were dead crabs EVERYWHERE down there.

72??? Wow!

I'm in S. FL and have a pool, no problems with crabs. I did see on the news that the town of Manalapan in Palm Beach county is having a problem with crabs. The crabs were all over the road, I mean all over.:scared1: I've never seen anything like it. :confused3 Let me see if I can find a link with pics.

I wonder if it has something to do with the lack of rain we've gotten? I know that the gators have been driven from thier usual ponds and lakes to look for other water and food sources, maybe the crabs, too? :confused3

Sounds like what she was talking about. Maybe her friend lives there. She said they were so bad that peoples' tires were getting punctured.

Can't be that here. It has rained nonstop for the past month here.
