Here are a few more recent pics of the demolition posted by J.C.&ALI'SMOM on the Resort Board

two weeks and they've only managed 1 section??
is this a government demolition crew they've hired?

I have been here at the Contemporary for the last week and we are in a Bay view room in the Contemporary. I have been able to watch the crews at work and it does seem to be going really slow. They are using 2 big excavators to pretty much beat the walls into submission and then cut them up into small peices that will fit in a construction dumpster. I have a couple of pictures that I will try and post once we get back, but they are pretty close to the ones that have been posted. I can report though that the first wing is down and the second "part" was started yesterday. They might be working a little quicker as they get a little more experience with the building.

It's just a deliberately slow method of knocking down the building and removing the debris. It would undoubtedly be quicker to explode the whole thing and have dump trucks lines up to cart away the debris, but they're running a resort all around there. This method minimizes the traffic impact, the dust and debris, the wetlands impact, the ugliness of the view from the tower rooms, etc.

But I liked A-V's theory better.

Actually, Building implosions utilizing explosive devices constitute a rarely-used demolition technique. I saw a special on the History Channel on this, as well as read it off of the EPA website. Most demolitions are not building implosions, but rather the type of practice being done at the Contemporary Resort.

Use of explosives is expensive and represents a danger to surrounding buildings. It is generally only employed when standard methods themselves would prove too dangerous in themselves, the size and shape of the building, the ability to protect other buildings, etc.

If they were to use explosives, the entire Contemporary would have to be evacuated for some period of time and the monorail shut down. Both would probably require extensive inspections afterwards to return to operation.

Just not worth it.

Absolutely. They need to minimize the seismic impact because of the tower. Plus, keep in mind that each room is constructed as a steel box inserted into a concrete support structure. The implosion of the concrete support beams and collumns may not collapse the boxes and gravity is the key energy force in bringing down the structure.

I'm leaving tomorrow morning to go up there for the long weekend. I'll see if I can take some pics from the monorail if there is any more progress.

I find this project very exciting. I've already started saving my pennies (ok, well...Benjamins) to purchase into the DVC @ the Contemporary. :cool1:

I stayed on the ground floor of the North Wing on a family trip way back when--I have to say I wasn't a big fan of the wings. Our tower stay this past NYE (MK view) was a great experience, but the Wings seemed unremarkable to me--less immagination and more volume. I won't miss it.

We are coming down at the end of April and this is the first I am hearing of this demolition and destruction. All my confirmation says is Garden Wing Garden View at CR. Is this very noisy and dusty? How was your stay? Did it ruin the atmosphere? I know by Apirl 28 they could be on a whole new part of this or if they are moving as slow as everyone is saying they could still be working on this

You'll be in the south garden wing, away from the demolition on the north side of the property.

And you feel this is far enough away from the "action"

I was the in December when the demolition was just starting. You might want to do a search on the Resorts or DVC board to determine if there have been any recent posts regarding the current demolition at the CR.

I think so. You'll actually be further away than the tower guests on that side.

But yeah, you might want to check the resorts board. You'll probably be more likely to get first hand accounts there.
