Coworkers 24 year old son died of H1N1 **yes, underlying conditons contributed**

At least 30% of young deaths didn't have underlying medical conditions. Everyone should have a healthy respect for this virus-it can kill anyone.
Respectfully, that's true of many viruses (virusi?).

Granted these statistics are from July, but according to this http://www.eurosurveillance.org/ViewArticle.aspx?ArticleId=19309 article, there had been 448 deaths worldwide at that time:
by age and sex http://www.eurosurveillance.org/images/dynamic/EE/V14N33/Pandemic_Fig3.jpg
percentage and mortality rates per million of population http://www.eurosurveillance.org/images/dynamic/EE/V14N33/Pandemic_Tab2.jpg

Not downplaying the seriousness of some cases, but look at the numbers and so the relative rareness of h1n1 being fatal.

For the past 2 days, I have not been feeling well. No cough, not really a fever, no chills or sneezing. But have felt a bit on the naseous side.

So if I take a nap I will die? No offense but all of you are freaking me out. I should not be panicking about this. I just don't feel well right????????

Carly Roach I have to agree with, the majority of those that have passed did have other things wrong with them and I do think they were severe.

Now I have high blood pressure...is that an underlying issue that if I don't get this vaccination I am going to die?

My mother works in a Cardiologists office, non of the nurses want to get it.

My friend works in ICU and another is a different hospital...doesn't want to get it. They don't trust it for whatever reason. So does that mean that if they get it they are going to die?

Its almost like a hysterical hysteria about where to get this shot right now. Its almost insane. But coming on here and reading this now freaks me out.

Talk to your physician and see if he/she thinks you should get the vaccine.

BTW- I am not vaccinated and most likely will not be. I am not "freaking" out and I can not believe that someone my dh knows has died from H1N1. This IS what happened to this young man.

You should be more worried about dying every time you get into a car.

OP, I am sorry for your sadness.

And yes, Carly, most of the time you do try and "start" something...or at least post in such a nasty condescending manner that people think you are trying to start something. What you call cool and logical, the average person sees as nasty and snippy. But, if that makes you feel better, go for it. I have a pretty thick skin having dealt with a ton of different personalities over the years, so not much bothers me by way of tone or attitude. But you shouldn't be surprised when other people "bristle".

There's my cool, logical repsonse to you. Don't bother responding to tell me that if other people take offense to you, that it's their problem not yours. I already know it's coming, so don't waste the DIS space.

I am so sorry to hear about the death of yet another young people -- age 24.

This thread was started to tell us about something sad. Why turn it into another argument about whether or not to get the H1N1 shot?

Either you believe that people should get it or not. But let people express their condolences without all the bickering.

My dd16 just went to a funeral today for her friends 48 yr old mom who died Tuesday of H1N1.

She went to the dr with symptoms last Thurs and died this Tuesday. However, she did NOT have underlying issues. She was a single mom of 3.

Sad and scary stuff.

Prayers for your friend...

Just wanted to add one more thought here.. I can understand people not wanting to receive this vaccine if they have concerns over the safety of the vaccine itself, but I'm confused by people who say "It's just the flu" - because who wants to be sick if they don't have to?? :confused3

Even if there are "other" strains of flu out there - not just the seasonal flu and the H1N1 flu - if a person can avoid at least 2 of the strains by being vaccinated, why not go ahead and do that?:confused3

Being sick is not one of my favorite things to do in life.. It's a waste of time, money, and makes me feel miserable and cranky.. Even if I didn't have underlying health issues, I guess that's why I have the mind set of taking whatever precautions are available to me.. Of course if I had any actual concerns about the safety of the available vaccines, I might have to think a little harder and longer about what I chose to do..

You asked this question and I recognize that this is OT from the original post but I wanted to reply.

I do not have some big fear over flu vaccines (seasonal or H1N1). I do not think people are going to get the vaccines and start glowing, grow two heads in 6 years or die instantly. I truly do not fear the vaccines.

However, you ask why people wouldn't get the shot just to avoid getting sick. My response to that is how do you know you would get sick if you didn't get the shot? I have had the flu twice in my adult life (not sure if I ever had it as a child) and DH has had it once. If I would have gotten a yearly seasonal flu vaccine all this time, that would have meant injecting my body with 25 years worth of crap to *possibly* avoid two viruses. That seems far more crazy to me.

I take Tylenol when I get a headache but I don't take Tylenol every day of my life because some day I might get a headache. To me, getting a flu vaccine yearly for something I don't catch very often doesn't make sense.

I am 110% in favor of flu vaccines. I have no beef whatsoever with the vaccines or the people that get them. I think they are a great thing for those that really need them. And if you don't really need them but you still want to pump chemicals into your body as a precaution, go for it. I do it when it is necessary (ex: Tylenol for a headache) but as a rule, I try not to take things as a preventative. If I started getting the flu every single year, I would be the first in line for the vaccine. I truly believe that for most healthy people, an occasional illness is not necessarily a bad thing.

I hope that helps explain why some people may not get the vaccine.

The death of a 24 y/o is tragic no matter what the cause.

When I just signed back on, I removed that post because I realized this was not the appropriate thread for it.. For some reason, when I posted the above I thought I was on a different H1N1 thread.. This isn't really the proper place to discuss it, but I really am interested in hearing others thoughts on this if someone would like to start a different thread..

To the OP: I apologize for getting the threads confused.. This thread is the one about a "loss" - not the one that I thought it was.. I truly am sorry..
