You asked this question and I recognize that this is OT from the original post but I wanted to reply.
I do not have some big fear over flu vaccines (seasonal or H1N1). I do not think people are going to get the vaccines and start glowing, grow two heads in 6 years or die instantly. I truly do not fear the vaccines.
However, you ask why people wouldn't get the shot just to avoid getting sick. My response to that is how do you know you would get sick if you didn't get the shot? I have had the flu twice in my adult life (not sure if I ever had it as a child) and DH has had it once. If I would have gotten a yearly seasonal flu vaccine all this time, that would have meant injecting my body with 25 years worth of crap to *possibly* avoid two viruses. That seems far more crazy to me.
I take Tylenol when I get a headache but I don't take Tylenol every day of my life because some day I might get a headache. To me, getting a flu vaccine yearly for something I don't catch very often doesn't make sense.
I am 110% in favor of flu vaccines. I have no beef whatsoever with the vaccines or the people that get them. I think they are a great thing for those that really need them. And if you don't really need them but you still want to pump chemicals into your body as a precaution, go for it. I do it when it is necessary (ex: Tylenol for a headache) but as a rule, I try not to take things as a preventative. If I started getting the flu every single year, I would be the first in line for the vaccine. I truly believe that for most healthy people, an occasional illness is not necessarily a bad thing.
I hope that helps explain why some people may not get the vaccine.
