COVID Testing - self swab?

Hi all,
We are sailing in July and cannot wait. I know everyone must be rapid tested at the port. My question is: does someone swab you or do you swab yourself? We have a 4.5yo son who HATES being COVID tested - he says he doesn't want to go on the cruise because he doesn't want to do the test. :( I'm hoping to know exactly what to expect in order to prep him!

Further, he will also need a PCR 1-3 days before we sail, correct? The rest of us are vaccinated.

Thanks!

And as I understand it, they do watch you as you do it to prevent people pretending to swab to avoid a positive, so there would be no way around you having to swab him.

Oh yes, the nurse stood there next to me the whole time. I also had never done it before, so I was super nervous about doing it wrong.

Last time, the nurse actually counted how many times I went around in each nostril!

Do they give you specific instructions? I honestly do not know how many circles I need to make in each nostril.

Yes, she told us exactly what to do. I just found it funny that she counted out loud like we were kids.

I wonder if she's done shifts at schools or pediatric clinics. I know when our kids go down for testing, we count the swirls to help keep them calm.

Could be. Or maybe a lot of people just don't follow instructions well. I don't know. She was really nice, though. I've had pretty good experiences with the Inspire people so far on my three cruises.

I’ve read that you are separated by cabin. I’m a bit worried because my youngest (5) is in my parents cabin. I think she will do better if I do the test. Anyone know if it would it be possible for her to come with us instead?

They insisted that we do it by stateroom when I was there in February. They use your reservation QR code to print labels for your test vials and stuff like that, so the right people need to be there.

Yeah, that makes sense. She’s typically easy going… we shall see!!

My DH just did an at-home test (non-proctored) and it called for 15 swirls -- for each nostril. Maybe that number is higher because people will stop at 6 or 7, but that would be enough.

Perhaps she could practice with a Q-tip with her grandparents so that the process is not occurring for the very first time in the testing room.

For the WBPC, the process we experienced was so casual, I was convinced it was entirely a sham. The nurse barely watched us and when she did, she said the swab didn’t have to go so deep - it wasn’t even deep. IDK.
