COVID super spreading family we know **Our friend has passed away**

Actually! he knows a lot about public health and epidemiology.

Also, he never said the statement that was posted by our DiSer. Gates's original statement was already slashed and altered by the tweeter Tom Elliott. Our guy/gal further trimmed and refashioned the statement.
His TED talk from 5 years ago was so spot on.

This post is just so shocking to me - please reconsider your selfish behavior before you actually kill someone. You might even be responsible for someone having a life altering condition for the rest of their life. IS it really okay with you that the "vast majority' is fine, but some people are dying from it?

It reflected the shocking behavior of the above poster, and many of us thought the same thing - let the poster's family suffer from the choices they are making, and please don't let it spread to others trying to survive.

So you have empathy for those that flout safety precautions, putting others at risk, but not for those that are actually trying to stay safe and are disgusted that all the months of precautions are wasted due to selfish behavior?
I agree. DH’s co-worker passed away yesterday (59), my friend’s sister an hour ago (48).

Things aren't that black and white.

I'm the first to criticize those who needlessly flout precautions. But I retain empathy for those who are hanging on for dear life, trying to navigate loss of economic security, living in a pandemic without health insurance, just looking for a way to put food on the table and provide for their families.

I think most people have empathy for those suffering. I don’t know anyone who wishes bad on others.

Nobody is going to say they are wishing bad on others. It's more like not empathizing with the tough choices they are needing to make for their families. Like accusing them of wanting to kill grandma if they want to keep their business open.

I know and agree with you. 🙂. Some of these posts get so angry and bitter, etc. I was just saying that even when people respond to a post or thread a certain way, I do think that in person, they most likely do care for and empathize with others.

Pneumonia now. Treating with antibiotics and steroids.

Hope he makes a full recovery Dan.

How awful mjkacmom.

If you have tested positive with Covid and you can find one -

An oximeter is good to have on hand, as it has been documented that those who do not fare well have a drop in oxygen levels without even realizing. And then it might be too late. Most drops in oxygen saturation have distinct signs, apparently Covid is not playing out that way.

Oh, I believe essential businesses should stay open. IF they will do masks and social distancing which many businesses in my area are not doing. Kids don't have to wear masks at school.

Disney. Broadway. Yeah, not so much. People will just have to find another line of work for awhile. My daughter wants to go to Broadway and is involved in musical theater. Or used to be. I've told her to have a back up career. You have to adjust to what the market can do. And singing isn't safe. So yeah, I do not have empathy for people taking a fun trip to Disney that might kill my grandmother.
So easy, right? Just find another line of work. In a pandemic. Like what, learn to code?

And that doesn't even begin to address the people whose life savings are disappearing before their very eyes from their small businesses.

Maybe they can get a job coding.

There’s really no point in arguing. At the end of the day, you don’t need their permission or empathy.

Well, those people can just go work at WalMart or somewhere. I mean, they would still be exposed to tons of people and therefore so would their families - but hey, that's better than letting people work at Disney because reasons. Who cares if theme parks employ thousands?? Let them work somewhere else.

So what makes a business essential in your eyes? The gift store or card store is essential to the owners but maybe not to you. That is the problem when you pick and choose businesses.

There should be metrics. So right now when the spread is uncontrolled and hospitals are getting overwhelmed EVERYTHING should be closed where more than 10 gathered. You may pick up but that is it. So like in El Paso only pick up from Walmart or wherever. Then tiered openings according to measurable metrics. We haven't truly done that. The teirs allow too much spread. The nurses are overwhelmed but we must have our Walmart fix or whatever. If hospitalization in your area is ok, then more can be open WITH MASKS. Businesses MUST mandate masks if they want to stay open. They must.
It's so easy to look at in terms of whether the customer's shopping needs are essential. That's missing the point. The problem is that earning a living (for the employees, and for the business owners) is almost always essential.

But I agree, if they want to be open, masks must be mandatory. No excuse right now for those not doing so. If they aren't, the answer is to close offending businesses, not to close entire swaths of business.

Have a significant amount of cases from patrons been traced to these stores in your area?

Here in NY we have use metrics and the contact tracing is not showing businesses as a place that cases are being transmitted. The exception being bars. The main problem is people gathering with others in their living rooms. How do we end that?? The police come and lock you in your house??? Just wondering. My area is currently the worst in NYS at one point we were one of the best places in the country. People getting together and hanging out is the issue. Governments close businesses because it is something they can control. Governments can not stop you from hanging with your friends in your house - at least not yet.

The person bringing it to the family gathering caught it somewhere else. Without contact tracing, we will never know.
How do we end in home gatherings? Sadly, that depends on people willing to sacrifice and do their part. We have few civic minded folks these days. True leadership at the beginning of this might have helped, instead of downplaying the seriousness.

Governments are not closing businesses because it is something they can control. Businesses are closing because they are allowing the government to control it. Not all businesses that are "being forced" to close are closing. Some of them are standing up and telling the government to shove it, and rightly so. And it's not just the "bad behaving businesses" you see on the news. Far more are following suit and doing what they need to do to feed their families.

I know you didn't ask me, but in reference to tracing, I think the contact tracing ship sailed a long time ago in the U.S. We just have too much of a raging pandemic to do that at this point. And here in NJ, literally 72% of all people who are contacted are not complying with the tracers. My sister and her husband both have Covid now. They've been careful, wearing masks anywhere that they went. They did partake in some outdoor dining recently, but did that throughout the summer as well and didn't get it. But they have no idea where they got it. There's just a ton of virus in most U.S. communities right now.
