I have a friend going through a trial right now (victim), and I'd like to come to court to help support her through this, but I won't be able to make it there when they start in the morning.

Is it OK to walk in during proceedings, or do I need to make sure to show up at a recess? I'd sneak in quietly and stay in the back, but I don't know for sure if they'd let me in. Anyone with experience in the courtroom know? Does it depend on the judge? The severity of the crime? This is as severe as it gets.

(I have a call in to my friend to ask her, but with all she's going through, I'm not really expecting a call back.)

Thanks,

Every judge and trial is different. My suggestion is to call the courthouse to inquire.

That's really nice of you to support your friend.

I work in a courtroom and I know that in our circuit, you can come in whenever you get there except during the judge's charge to the jury. Then the bailiffs lock the doors. Also, there should be a bailiff by the door, so if for any reason you couldn't go in, they would stop you and tell you when you can go in.

HTH and you're a good friend.

Each state is different, and the judge has discretion on what is best for the courtroom. However, in general all adult trials are public.

Thank you everyone. I think I'll call the courthouse and ask. I don't want to show up 5 minutes after they went back in from recess and have to wait around until after lunch.
