Sure. My son's class (when he was younger) was asked to bring in their favorite book and talk about it to the class. DS brought the Bible. I was called and told to come pick it up and got a "talking to". We did not suggest to DS what book he should bring, BTW. If you want to reign in all of us darned Christians then at least put equal effort into reigning in the anti-religious zealots as well, IMO.
That's not an example of a school 'prohibiting a student from bringing a Bible to school to read silently during free time' - in your situation, the book was to be discussed in class.
When I attended school - a time when separation of church and state was seriously regarded - I took a Bible to school with me and read it silently during free time and I was never told that I couldn't. Even wore "Jesus" t-shirts. Imagine that.
The difference is - I was an indivdual expressing my freedom to worship, act according to my personal beliefs - the other cases involve school officals leading religious discussion to a captive audience. They are not the same and the ACLU would view them very differently.
