Court slaps down ACLU

the ACLU can kiss my Smurf. It's about time a judge in this country had the stones to tell them to go pound sand.

OMG!!! That is AWESOME!!!! :rotfl2: Yeah, I was glad to see the "Anti-Christian League Unlimited" get smacked for once!!!

Um, I thought the original intent of "Separation of Church and State" was to keep government out of religion, not necessarily the other way around?

A big amen!!

("Anti-Christian League Unlimited" -- I'll have to remember that!)

I think it's interesting that there are some Christians that truly believe there is actually some sort of conspiracy out there to squelch their religion. Then there are others that swear the Christians are trying to take over this country and force their will on others. I find it fascinating that two groups can have such a totally different take on the religious atmosphere in this country.

If you really think about it, one group probably exists because of the other. I do not like the ACLU because they are so pushy and opinionated. I am a Christian, but I don't know that I believe in the conspiracy theory. However, we seem to get the most heat (though, we are not the ones that flew planes into the Twin Towers) I have a co-worker that is Jewish and we agree on many issues where it comes to government, society and religion. I say, to each his own, but do not infringe on my rights to worship Christ outside of my church.

By the way, I am certainly not trying to stir the pot. Some people are extremists, no matter what their beliefs. I am not extremist, I just want to live my life without the ACLU trying to cram their "desires" down my throat. Maybe I have an issue with them because they have been so highly publicized lately.

I like this thread (as long as it stays friendly). It is thought provoking!

Uh huh, but posting religious quotes on Public property, isn't "cramming" religion down someone's throat? Or trying to change the name of something to make it Christian isn't?

Half of our city council recently voted to change the name of the annual "Holiday Stroll", an event that has been going on for 25 years as "Holiday Stroll", to CHRISTMAS Holiday Stroll..the tied vote had to be broken by the mayor.

You are more than welcome to practice your religion in church, in your home, even in public. Just don't make it mandatory for others to participate.

...though, we are not the ones that flew planes into the Twin Towers...

And I don't think everyone of the Muslim faith did, either. Unless you believe that everyone of the Christian faith were responsible for the bloody and deadly Crusades to find "Holy relics". I guess following that logic, though, "Christians" blew up the Federal Bldg in Kansas City?

No actually, it isn't even remotely.

Then why is to sooooo important to some Christians that religious quotes appear in a courthouse? Especially if non-Christian religions are not also recognozed. Would Christians fight just as passionately if it were a quote from the Torah or Kuran?

Umm, I think that's what I was saying. Don't affect my way of worship and I will not affect yours. Back to the ACLU...I feel like they are trying to affect my rights to worship as I please. It sometimes seems as if they are trying to create an atheist nation and that will impact peoples of all religions.

Point taken, Chuck. I digress on that statement. I was wrong to use that as an example.

But how does not allowing the 10 Commandments in a courthouse, which is what this thread is about, in anyway affect your right to worship as you please? You could bring your own Bible and read silently to yourself...law does not ban that at all.

It bans the practice of displaying religious text out of context, for the sheer purpose of posting religious text. It does allow for such displays as part of a historical tableau on the history of law, however that, according to the Supreme Court, almost always has to be decided on a case by case basis, which is what the ACLU is doing. It is EASY for a courthouse to comply with the ruling, it simply has to post those text accordingly...why are they refusing to do so, and why are Christians fighting it so?

Because these are people with seriously shaky beliefs. You can tell a lot about a person and their "faith" by how they respond to this stuff. It's not "worship" it's dumbed-down devotion. Their sense of spirituality is so shaky that it must be shored up by a big slab of rock. Be nice, these people deseve pity. Their Christian beliefs depend upon acknowledgement from a Kentucky court. It seems an insult to the glory of true faith to seek it from Richard Suhrheinrich (who?). But then if they can't have their big stone it will seriously "affect their ways of worship." See?

I many public schools across the country bringing a Bible is indeed prohibited.

I've done a google search. I did not find any cases that prohibit anyone from bringing a Bible to school to read silently during their non-classroom time (lunch, recess, etc). Can you show me evidence to support your claims?

If that is indeed true, then it is wrong. The Bible should not be taught in public school but a student should be able to bring it to read in his or her free time. If the student starts to read aloud and tries to "preach" to his fellow students however, then the school has every right, imho, to ban that student from bringing it to school.

Sure. My son's class (when he was younger) was asked to bring in their favorite book and talk about it to the class. DS brought the Bible. I was called and told to come pick it up and got a "talking to". We did not suggest to DS what book he should bring, BTW. If you want to reign in all of us darned Christians then at least put equal effort into reigning in the anti-religious zealots as well, IMO.

I think Chuck was looking for proof of a school district that banned the Bible from being brought to school to be read silently. Glad to see there apparantly isn't one.

Hmmm, what was "anti-Christian" about that? I'm pretty sure the same rule would have been applied to other religious texts. Your initial response about being "banned in school" was about my post stating you were free to bring a Bible and read silently to yourself during non-classroom time. "Talking about it in class" is NOT reading silently to yourself, is it?
