Counterfit Disney Dollars

I was watching the local news tonight from Orlando and they had a story regarding Counterfit Disney Dollars. They said they are in the WDW parks and a memo had been sent out to all Disney employees... here is what I found on Mouse Planet. Be careful everyone when buying these from sources other than Disney itself. I've seen Disney Dollars on EBay so they could be real or they could be one of the fakes going around, just a heads up...Sad!

"Walt Disney World has released an internal security memo informing cast members that counterfeit Disney Dollars have appeared in the resort. According to the memo, these fakes are realistic-looking color copies of the real bills. However, while genuine Disney Dollars are printed with shiny color-reflective dots near Tinkerbell, the counterfeits have glitter glued around the area. The memo notes that this glitter can be felt by touch, and we assume the fakes use inferior paper and lack the lightly raised ink of real Mouse currency.

As counterfeiting becomes easier with technology, Disney may be facing the same issues—albeit at a smaller level—as the U.S. Secret Service in keeping one step ahead of counterfeiters."

Clever lads.

Counterfeiting a single US $20 bill is a Federal rap that could get you years, but counterfeiting Disney dollars - as long as it's less than whatever the petty theft limit is in Florida ($500?) - isn't even a felony...

And the counterfeit Disney Dollars go so well with the bogus tickets you buy on I-Drive!

Disney Dollars are always sold new. When you spend them you get regular US currency as change. I am surprised that they haven't moved to a branded gift card program to replace the bills.

They have, sorta. If you have the Disney Rewards CC, one option for redeeming your points is with a debit card.

Do you give you CC away to people as gifts?

Part of the fun is having the bills with Disney characters on them! It just isn't the same with a character on a charge card.

Let me try this again........

What does giving away my CC have to do with my comment ? My post was not complicated, but obviously it doesn't have to be for you to not understand it. Let me explain it again, only I wish I had a crayon:

OWTS commented that he was suprised Disney hasn't already gone to a debit card system. I responded that they now offer a debit card with the new Rewards Program. The implication was that OWTS good idea may be coming to fruition as Disney now offers at least one type of debit card.

Oh, just in case: fru ition) realization, accompishment

No, but I do give Nordstrom Gift Cards, Borders Gift Cards, Restaurant Gift Cards, and I would give Disney Gift Cards if I felt like it. There is a big difference between the two.

Exactly. We recently spent a week at Disney and when we got there I gave each of my children like $32 in Disney Dollars (2 of each denomination) for souvineer money. They enjoyed spending it, counting what they have left, etc... Wouldn't have been the same at all giving out gift cards.

My kids never used Disney Dollars, but they loved being able to charge to their room key, but they were 15 & 12 the first time we went to WDW.

I don't know how younger kids would feel about using a debit card, but after it's spent, they would still have the card as a soviener.

Bottom line though is that if counterfitting becomes a bigger issue, then Disney may have no choice but to go to a gift card system.

My kids use the room keys, too, and they like them much better than Disney dollars. They think that they have their own credit cards. They would probably be smart to just get rid of the Disney Dollars altogether.

I wonder how much money is lost to Disney each year through the Disney Dollars? I'd imagine that enthusiastic families stock up, spend and then return home with the few disney dollars they have left which inevitably end up lost at the back of sock draws or down the back of radiators...

I would guess that quite a bit may be lost. I just found an envelope with $30 Disney dollars in my desk the other day that I had no idea was there.

Probably a lot less than they make each year on Disney dollars that aren't spent. I know that my Brother (and I can't imagine that he's the only one) has saved his Disney dollars (one of each denomination) from his trips as a souvenier.

I imagine the "Disney 20 Dollar" bill framed on the wall by a family as a momento of their vacation has the highest profit margin of anything sold by Disney!

The Disney Dollars are truely beautiful printing, and they do have those nifty sparkles - but it can't cost more than a double handful of cents to print them...

I have $200.00 dis dollars sitting in a drawer. They are earning no interest. They are actually losing value every time Disney raises a price.

Disney dollars have been a gold mine over the years. Not just in unredeemed Dis Dollars, but because they've gotten your cash upfront.

They do change Disney Dollars every year or so, in every denomination. I know at our store, we have guests coming in asking if we have any of the new ones that they don't have. How many different 10's, 5's, and 1's have they put out since Disney Dollars started in the 80's (I think)? Wow, this probably offsets the cost of the counterfeit Disney Dollars easily! Who knows!
