Rumors are circulating lately that DINOSAUR may change back to the old Countdown to Extinction ride format bringing the height restriction back to 46 inches. They said this may happen in Spring 2002 when DINO-RAMA opens up. Don't know if they will change the name back or not but it would be nice though.

I would doubt that Disney would do this, considering the bad press they've been getting over the brain damaged woman who rode the Indian Jones ride. Like shaking a child, seems that shaking some adults may not be a good thing either. This may have been part of the reason they 'calmed' it down a bit to begin with.

I hope the rumor is true and the ride becomes alot wilder. As it is now its almost boring and devoid of any thrills.

Most, including myself, noticed no appreciable difference between the original and the 'so-called' toned down version. It seems as jerky as ever.

I have ridden the ride a lot and I noticed the difference right off the bat. My dad on the other didn't but then he is always off somewhere in space. :D

I'm going to have to agree with JeffH. The jerkiest part of the attraction seems to be when you are in the dark and Grant Seeker is shouting instructions "Turn left, right, now left!!" I don't recall it ever being any jerkier than that. I could be wrong, but I recall the first time I rode it after the change - it didn't seem any different. The only thing that seems to have changed is that the Pteradactyl used to swoop down at you, now he's (or is it she's) stationary. The change in height could just be a change - similar to that of Splash Mountain several years ago.

Imagine the kids (like my daughter) that really enjoy the attraction and have waited to be tall enough now finding out that they are now too small!?!?!? That's not the kind of guest complaint that WDW wants or needs right now. And besides, speeding it up won't make it a better attraction.

I'll put on my swami hat and prognosticate and say this change doesn't happen.

I've only ever rode it when it was CTX. Indy is Much more jerky, but is also more visually intense.

I couldn't see Indy, I was trying to hard to cover my childs screaming countance.
He was so afraid...

indy is certainly NOT a ride to take young Children on. It is visually intense and very Jerky. It is an Incredible ride that's for sure, but not one for children that are not so brave if you will.

I've never been to Disneyland but when I do get down there that I'm going to ride the Indy ride so many times that I'm going to be sick. :p I love the EMV system.

I'm pleased. I thought it was too jerky before, and more than that... with the increased jerkiness came more speed. So, with the slow down I actually saw MORE of the ride. My vote is to keep it like it is now. (Well, you can change the name back if you wish, but please keep it slower.) By the way, it isn't real slow, even now.

I would love it if "Countdown" reverted to it's original name and ride.

A fairly creative title like "Countdown to Extinction" dumbed down to "Dinosaur" is pretty disappointing. Imagine if they did that with all the other rides:

"The Living Seas" would be "Sea"
"Kilaminjaro Safari" would be "Animals"
"Kali River Rapids" would be "Raft"
"It's Tough to be a Bug" would be "Bugs"
"Test Track" would be "Fast Car"
"Big Thunder Mountain Railroad" would be "Runaway Train"

You get the idea....

Imagineers go to a lot of trouble to create these attractions and spend countless hours on the details, only to have it get watered down once the product is "finished".

But I do doubt Dinosaur will revert to it's wider ride settings (although I would love for it to!). The more people (families and kids) that are able to ride Dinosaur, keeps people in the parks longer since there is one more big attration (a.k.a. long line) to keep you in the parks an extra hour.

That translates into another soda, ice cream, meal, souvenier, etc., etc.

The idea is to have a park people can't do in 1/2 a day. Sometimes if you get to Animal Kingdom early enough and don't see every show, you are done by 1pm without even racing around!

Dinosaur was renamed after the movie which it was inspired by (which might have originally had a working title of CTX?)

The actual analogies would be:
"The Living Seas" would be "Little Mermaid's Grotto"
"Kilaminjaro Safari" would be "The Lion King Tour"
"It's Tough to be a Bug" would be "Bugs Life"

GOOD- Dinosaur is such a bad name- i like the Countdown to extinction ride- i thought it fit the ride very well.

I just got back and that ride was waaaayyy to jerky as it is!

I can't imagine that this is a toned down version.

I love thrill rides .... but this one gave me a headace and hurt my DH back.

...that they've already kicked Dinosaur back up at least a notch or two.

During May of 1999, we rode Countdown to Extinction and thought it was a great, if wild, ride. Upon returning in December 1999, we rode Dinosaur and found it fairly dull. Without the gyrations of the car, it was too easy to concentrate on the fact that the ride isn't themed very thoroughly: you just lurch through the dark to a series of lit, loud animatronics. We didn't care about returning to Dinosaur for a couple of trips.

In March of this year, we went down with my sister, her husband, and their baby, and did Dinosaur again for their sake. The ride was definitely jerkier than it was in December '99, but neither of us remembered it being as enjoyable as the May '99 rides.

So I believe the ride is "jerkier" than it had been, but that the original ride program was a superior flavor of "wild," if you know what I mean.

Jeff

PS - I agree completely that Countdown to Extinction kicks Dinosaur's butt when it comes to attraction naming...

Well, since the film DINOSAUR didn't do too well at the box office, I think they can stop the promotion for the movie.
