couldn't finish "Twilight" book..anyone else?

I am the complete opposite. I didn't think I would like the books, but so far I have enjoyed the light reading. Granted I have only read the first two, just picked up Ecilpse in paperback the other day. I will say in the second book, I did get a bit tired of Bella's constant "hurting" bit. The depression and such got a little old.

I enjoyed the series for the most part, New Moon was painful though. I was so tired of Bella's character.

Alright, this will make me a hated figure amongst Twilight fans. But I have read what you would call "trashy" novels, I mean I'm in college and I need a little lift so I will cue in to the romance novels with the guy holding a heaving girl, with outrageous plots and somehow I could not stomach Twilight to save my life. The book seems to be for teenage fangirls who will scream at me obsessively at me " Edward is hawt!!!1!!"

A. Um, Edward's vampirism. I have read vampire type of books, made myself a fan of Anne Rice and so Edward to me is Lestat lite. They sparkle in the sunlight? Lame.

B. Bella and Edward are as dull as powder. Bella is a normal teen in a sense but once you take that away from her, she is just whiny and dependent and a distressing damsel. Bella seems to snub anyone who is slightly different from her..humanwise but the vampires are so different I guess, with their glittered limbs. Edward is very possessive over Bella that I kind of wanted her to dump him, but alas his eye glitter must have got in her eyes. My sister once said that Bella is a hero and I just glared at her. I mean, it seems that he dictated who her friends should be. He treats her like a child.

C. The plot has a lot of holes in it. Also, my sister (older stepsister) gushed to me that the story was about loving one another despite everything, except to me it seemed that Bella's real attraction to Edward was that he was hot. That's it. And Meyers seems to go on and on about Edward's looks and how many times can I read the word "pale" before I go blind? Bella herself seems to be a self involved teenager who lacks empathy and common sense.

Rant over.

Read all four books and HATED myself for it afterwards...like when you eat a half gallon of cheap ice-cream by yourself. The books are awful, the characters intolerable. The writing was lame.

Summary:

Edward I love you
Bella I'm dangerous
Edward I love dangerous
Bella I'm a monster
Edward I love monsters
Bella I'm bad for you
Edward I love things bad for me
Bella I'm a vampire
Edward I want to be a vampire

Go back to the Edward I love you and start all over again

:lmao:
that's what I though too!

"we shouldn't be together so what should we do about it? we should talk about it for 50 more pages".

I found the other three more bearable. I actually kind of liked Eclipse and Breaking Dawn in a light trashy sort of way. Although I hated that she switched from Bela's to Jacob's perspective at one of the most interesting parts.

I have found my people!

I read all the books on the recommendation of a cousin. I HATED the love story. The idea that teen girls are swooning over that sick relationship upsets me terribly. Really, really upsets me. Thank heaven I do not have a teen daughter.

I've read Anne Rice and enjoyed her books, but I'm not much into that genre. I thought the vampire/werewolf thing was interesting.

Oh, I am so glad to read this! Everyone at my work is obsessed with these books and I just do not get it!

I read all four to give a fair judgment- I love Harry Potter, but thought the first two books were fairly poorly written. So I thought perhaps they would get better.

But no. I thought they were awful. I was actually disappointed none of them died. I found Edward to be far too controlling...why does he get to decide what kind of car Bella drives? I also though the fact that Bella freaked out about possibly being one year older than Edward was awful...why is it so bad for women to date a man younger than they are? Are we only beautiful and date-able when we're 17? What a horrible message to send to young girls.

I read Twilight and New Moon because many of the kids in my class are reading it. After the second book I couldn't take it anymore. There was not one likeable, believable character.

I, too, tried to read Twlight, but the book failed miserably. What is sexy and smokin' about nasy coprse-y ice cold skin? Nothing. A 200 year old man in love with a teenage girl is not hot, its pedophelia. Bleh. Controlling old man with gullible girl=ewwwwww

I've read Anne Rice and enjoyed her books, but I'm not much into that genre. I thought the vampire/werewolf thing was interesting.

I have also read Anne Rice, first 3 books so far.

Anyway I have to comment on the use of the word "werewolf". They are not "werewolves" they are shape shifters. As a supernatural junkie I am going to have to go back and find out if she calls them werewolves. I don't remember.

I did find the premise of the reason very interesting.

Well, I am a book snob (Nora Roberts makes me gag), so I found Twighlight to be a painful read (I wanted to preview it before dd read it). It appeared to be written by a 14 year old, with very weak characters. However, dd13 loved them! :rotfl2:

She does, but it gets explained in Breaking Dawn when they meet the Volturi in the meadow. Hoping to save you some time..... ;)

Thanks for posting this, OP. I have been thinking I "should" read these books because everyone else is and they are so popular, but now I don't think I will. I couldn't even get through the first 100 pages of Harry Potter and I thought there was something wrong with me. There are so many books to read and I think I will use my time on things that really interest me, not reading something because everyone else is doing it.

I have read every freaking one of those books and hated every minute of it--often getting frustrated and throwing the book. :lmao: Yes, I continued to subject myself to them because my teenage dd was reading them. She was 17 at the time and I hadn't monitored her reading for years but she gave me the first one and told me how much she liked it.

I continued reading them so I could point out that Bella was a cautionary tale on how NOT to behave. :rotfl: I was particularly upset with the second book--Bella is so depressed that she's engaging in behavior that could get herself killed all over a boy. Until...she meets another boy and then...yippee...life is worth living again. What the heck?

After I gave dd my viewpoint on the book, she admitted that she was pretty over Bella herself by book 2. I then gave her a copy of Pride & Prejudice and told her to pay special attention to Lizzie Bennett and look at the differences between her character and Bella and decide who she'd rather emulate.

Frankly, the "vampires" aren't really vampires either. Unless you have FANGS and burst into flames in the sun and are violently allergic to garlic and crosses you are NOT a vampire...you're just an emo-superhero with special dietary needs.

sparkling in the sun...BAH!

Well, now I have to say something, now that we are discussing vamps.;)

Anyone watching the new BBC show called "Being Human"? It sounds like a bad joke but it is a new twist on vamps there too. A ghost, a werewolf (true werewolf), and a vamp, 20 somethings, living together. It has only been 3 episodes so I do not think they have addressed the sun issue other than "it isn't good for them".

I don't mind the "sparkle in the sun" I find it to be interesting actually. You have "Blade" with his condition, which is done well.

Everyone I know loved the series too. And like I said, I enjoyed reading them, but not cause I thought they were incredible books like seems to be the popular opinion, but because I could read 1 book in 2 days. Great way to pass the time at soccer practice and such, but I did not get the love people had for Bella at all.

I agree! I read all four in a month. I enjoyed them, after I reminded myself they were written for teens. The first time I tried to read Twilight, I put it down after 50 pages. It was crap. So boring and the writing style grated on my nerves. But, when my step daughter really got into them, I tried again. It got better. It is never going to be a literary classic, but it was a fun read while the baby napped. I actually liked the movie better than the book. It left out the pointless rambling. :thumbsup2

But does the BBC vampire have fangs??

Also, Blade is only a HALF vampire...IIRC. His mom was turned into a vampire while he was in the womb, so he gets a pass.

PS...if you thought Twilight was tough, try getting through "The Host". That book I honestly just gave up on after 50 pages or so.

I keep hearing about the book and movie. I hear about it from people I admire, trust and respect. I *LOVE* to read...but I can't read "just anything." Anyway, I picked up Twilight (the book) and forced myself to read to page 129...and I have now decided to give up.

First of all...the whole vampire thing turns me off. I keep hearing how that is not the main focus, it is a love story, blah blah blah. But as I read the book and get into it...the vampire thing hangs over me and I cannot get past it, and I don't even think the writing is all that spectacular.

Anyway, I am not being a book snob...I have read some cr@p that I have loved...just wondering if there are any others out there that feel the same?

I kept hearing about these books and my friends finally convinced me to give it a try. I am on about page 150 now. I have to admit I was skeptical of the "love story" part, as I am not a love story reader. So far I have liked it and the vampire stuff is interesting me. I plan to keep reading. At the end of the book (if I make it) I will then decide if I will get the next book (New moon - I think).

I will not read the entire series hoping it will get better. I did that with the Golden Compass and vowed to never waste my life like that again.

Yes, the BBC vamps have fangs and of course the lead vamp is a hot guy.;) It is a show that is British so you have to keep that in mind.

Blade is a 70's Marvel Comic Hero and he is the definition of cool as a "hunter". My 2 favorite "hunters" are Sam and Dean of "Supernatural".

I will be honest, I have never seen so many supernatural shows in my life. I am enjoying every minute of it.:lmao:
