Could someone please explain the Dixie Chicks video to me?

Our soldiers are brave. :sunny:

Natalie just thinks she's brave.

There are many forms of bravery. Soldiers don't own it - many exhibit it and demonstrate it, but it's not exclusive to them.

I also think bravery is a perceived characteristic. What I consider brave, couragious, gutsy, etc. is based on my own fears.

Speaking/acting out against something you feel passionate about even at the risk of losing your career, life, loved ones can be admirable.

I don't understand the video either.

I do not think people got angry for what she said, it was where she said it.

I didn't like them when they first came out as a group, though I do like some of their songs, I think they are full of themselves.

Our troops are fighting for our freedoms, always have. They have the right to say what they want (where they want. Well, someplaces) and I have the right to disagree and not buy their music. Freedom is a two way street.

My husband is a soldier - been to the sandbox three times and has the scars, PTSD, and combat action badge to prove it.

He is a Dixie Chicks fan, and he's proud of them for speaking their minds. That's what he's fighting for - the right to speak out against your government without fear of reprisal.

:thumbsup2 Thank you and your husband for that. We need to hear that more often!

You can speak out against the government without the fear of reprisal from THEM but that doesn't mean that the general public won't speak out against you if they disagree. That's the beauty of this country.

Threatening physical violence is not acceptable and illegal.

I, for one, am thru with them.
I think its ironic that THEY arent ready to 'forgive'.

in regards to an earlier post, Bush did not 'threaten' them. Extremist ex-fans did, which is inexcusable in any situation.

Brave?, for what, speaking their minds, anyone can do that.

They did not just "speak their minds" - they, unlike most celebrities, did not backtrack and apologize once it was clear that their words had financial consequences.

Their careers were honestly ruined by those comments. Most country radio stations will not play their music anymore at all. Sales of the album they had out at the time plummeted (and it was a very good, much anticipated record).

And all that is perfectly fine - fans and radio stations are entitled to hate them and refuse to buy their music.

But - most celebrities would be falling all over themselves to apologize and say whatever the public wanted to hear, to get those fans and dollars back.

It does take guts to stand by your words - even though it costs you dearly.

Would you apologize to someone who threatened to kill you or kill your child? Heck no! I would stand up and fight, and that is what they are doing. I was never a fan, but respect them for standing up to idiots and not backing down!

I would have more respect for any celebrity who realizes that people are paying them for their gift of entertainment, period. If they want to go into politics, all the power to them. I am just sick of celebrities using the public as a platform for their political agenda. And I feel that way no matter which side of the coin they are on. I think many in the public are sick of it too.

I'm not a country music fan so needless to say I'd never seen the video or heard the song but this post prompted me to go find it on the net. After seeing it I think it's pretty clear what the song/video is about and I think it's cool to see people speak their mind and stick to what they say.

I think a celebrity has as much right as anyone of us to speak their political beliefs or use their medium for that expression . They often used it to draw attention to non-political issues - Michael J. Fox for Parkinson's is a good example. No one shames him for taking advantage of his celebredom (I just made that word up ;) )

I never said they don't have the right, I said I was sick of hearing it...two entirely different things.

The Dixie chicks are not an example of female free speech martyrdom. NM made some unpopular (in her core audiences minds) comments, felt the backlash...apologized...then when that didn't work, she retracted her apology, they found that there are some people who want to see more of that and they are commercially working the political angle now. Nothing but the typical PR reinventing yourself to gain an audience. They really do not care who the audience is, IMHO. And all the power to them, they are supposed to market themselves to make money...but please, they are not doing anything to go down in history as women who made a difference.

I do not see anything brave or admirable about any of it. Anyone can speak their mind. I haven't seen them do anything other than make bold statements.

My friend Shira who is a fan explained the song to me about how Natalie Maines make some rude comments about Bush, and Bush threatened her. It's one of my favorite songs, whatever it's about!

I don't think Bush threatened her, never heard that, but alot of people did and some of them were fans threatened to kill her, her family, etc.

May I correctly assume that you are equally sick of Toby Keith as well?

Folks, this was not meant to be a debate about the right and wrongs of the Dixie Chicks/celebrities vs. politics. I didn't get the video and was hoping someone else did.

You can correctly assume that I'm sick of him, but it really isn't due to his politics, it's just him. :teeth: Some of his songs make no sense to me and that one were he raps the following line:

We talk about your nana up in muntzi, indiana,
We talk about your grandma down in alabama

Honestly, who writes songs like that? He can't even spell Muncie correct. I cut and pasted those lyrics from his website. :confused3

Sorry Mugg Mann, I couldn't resist. :teeth:

Don't worry about it, you're not the first person who has experienced the dreaded "Run away thread syndrome" that occurs on these boards. They have a mind of their own sometimes.

Yep, I have no interest in celebrities political opinions.

The only time I even give their opinions a second thought is when they are actually taking the time to be learned and heavily involved in the issue they are talking about. Like Michael J Fox and Parkinsons.
