Could I get an opinion or possible solutions?

We have a trip planned to Aulani in June using points including 150 banked points from 2018. I inquired about cancelling so we would go the same time next year and was told by Member Services that I would have to use those 150 points by December or deposit them into RCI. Which means Aulani will not work for us for next year. Is there a solution? Could I rent those points out then borrow? It is so disappointing as we saved points for this trip.

You could certainly try to rent them and then borrow, However, borrowing is temporarily changed and you can only borrow 50% of your contract until further notice,

We don’t know how long that will be in place. I predict at least a year

Other than that, your other options is to try and squeeze in a trip with them. If not, the. RCI will be it,

Based on the current information, DVC resorts will be up and running with months left on those points. I’m sorry it is not the situation you hope for.

The info that you got from Member Services is correct based on the current rules. Those 150 points that were banked into your 2019 UY will need to be used for a reservation that ends no later than the night of 11/30/20.

You can rent those points out, if you like. Availability is drying up and finding a renter who can go before the end of November will be a challenge. Be prepared to rent those points out for a very low price.

Something else you will need to know for 2021...
  • You will need to bank your 2019 points by July 31, 2020.
  • You will need to cancel the current reservation 31 days or more in advance in order to keep the points from going into holding. (Assuming that DVC stops waiving the holding penalty once resorts open)
  • You will not be permitted to borrow more than 50% of your 2021 points into your Dec 2020 UY to make a reservation.

Ugh..thank you both. It really sounds like I have lost the money on the 150 points and with only 50% borrowing capability of my 2021 points it would appear the trip is off. I really cannot place my 150 points up for rent until I officially cancel my reservation. I can't cancel my reservation until Hawaiian Air cancels the flight because otherwise I am left with a flight credit instead of a refund. This is a financially devasting turn of events

That is awful. I am sorry....

I am trying to figure out an August trip. We have borrowed 192 points from 2021 to make reservation. My pickle is that I can't figure out if I cancel now, will they return those 192 to my 2021 year?

Thanks for any insight.....

As of today they will, However, I think as soon as they announce an opening date for resorts, that will stop.

So, I would suggest calling today as I am hearing they may announce something Saturday.

Sandisw and Marionette..I appreciate you telling me like it is with facts but what would you do in my situation...seriously? If you calculate my loss of points to a trip to Aulani that I would like to take next year but can't because I lost the 150 2018 use year points and wont have enough points to borrow with the 50% in 2021 to reschedule...I am out what $7,200 in points and 5,000 in non refundable airfare if HA doesn't cancel the flight? $12,500.00 is a huge pill to swallow. Just curious to each of you??? What would you do?

If it were me, I’d find a way to use them for a trip to WDW before they expire,

Or, I’d start investigating the RCI trade options. While this is not ideal, you might find something that would interest you,

Once in RCI, you do hsve 2 years to use them,

We are not eligible to use RCI...we bought it resale (although DVC member services didn't see it on our account) The points expire November 30th and none of our kids would be able to travel with college after August. Not to mention the potential $5,000 in airfare to Hawaii...as it is right now with Hawaiian Air..they are extending credit for us to use next year...everything is against us right now. The only other thing to look at for next summer would be changing our 2 bedroom to a 1 bedroom at Aulani. We would still loose our 150 points though. It just seems as if the general feeling is that Members have to loose their points in order to meet the demand for everyone once things have opened up. It was what we signed up for. Ok..I take the hit on the 2018 points but capitulate after that.

EDIT: I just looked and I can travel through RCI even though I purchased resale...So...my only redemption is if Hawaiian Air cancels the flight

Lets hope the airline does and you get your money. Id still bank the 150 into RCI if you simply can’t use or rent them before they expir.

At least, you’d have 2 years to decide,,,worst case, you don’t ever use them, but maybe you know someone who could and you gift to them.

Travel without the kids to WDW by 11/30/2020 and stay in a studio? That would take 150 points, if there was still availability?

I wouldn’t do the RCI Trade . I did that once not much you can get for 150. I would try to get something at WDW. Call them.

I'm missing something of why the Hawaiian Airlines part makes a difference in cancelling the DVC room unless you mean that you will go if Hawaii starts letting visitors in and Aulani reopens by the time of your trip? You mention how you're out both the DVC points and the airfare if Hawaiian doesn't refund and I don't see that they are necessarily tied together.

Sure thing...We have $5,000 worth of HA airfare and another $700.00 with a neighbor island trip. If say I cancel Aulani, Hawaiian air will only give credit for use in a year. If I use that for next year to go back to Aulani..I do not have enough points because I lost my 2018 banked and I can only borrow 50% of 2020. I wouldnt have enough. But if Hawaiian Air cancels the flight, I get a cash refund.

What about booking some place in Hawaii through RCI if you end up with a Hawaiian air credit?

You could always rent or transfer a few points from another DVC member and still go in 2021. Yes, it’s not fun to rent when you have your own contracts, but then you can in turn rent out or transfer the 2022 points, and break even.

You could consider cancelling Aulani now and leave the Hawaiian Air and see if they end up cancelling flights because of restrictions. Then a possibility would be for you to attempt to rent out your 2018 points. You could then take those funds and get a transfer of points from someone that could be used on a trip next year to make up for the 50% of points that you are restricted from borrowing. Or use the funds to rent a reservation to supplement the days you can book with your own points. Or even pay cash either thru DVC or Disney at Aulani for the missing nights to supplement the nights you can book with your own points. And if you rent the 2018 points out to pay for a transfer, rental or cash booking for the nights you can no longer borrow from then you could use the Hawaiian Air credit if that ends up being all that is available.
