Okay, this is kind of Disney related, because if I am pregnant then I'm not going to be able to ride some of the best rides at Disney in a few months. And if I'm pregnant it will be because of this disney trip I'm planning.

Let me start from the beginning. I've been Disney obsessed lately. Trying to plan and make this the perfect vacation for my family. A month ago I noticed that my monthly period was going to fall DURING our Disney vacation! Ugh! I didn't want to have to deal with that during vacation. I'm on the pill so I decided to delay starting my next pack of pills for two weeks. During those two weeks I didn't let my husband anywhere near me :). Until the last Saturday night, I forgot and something (ha ha) happened. When I woke up Sunday morning I started taking my next package of birth control pills. Basically I was unprotected for about 10 hours! Ugh! If I did get pregnant during that super short amount of time, then I shouldn't be taking birth control pills. If I'm on the pill will a pregnancy test work? I have two more weeks of pills to take before I should get my period again. I'm not sure if I can wait that long. I've been kind of crampy feeling and my husband mentioned that my breasts seem larger. Should I just tough it out and wait until I'm due for my next period?

Thanks

I would not worry about it!! Its unlikely you got pregnant plus you would not even be showing signs of being pregnant yet..

just for the record, the next time you want to delay your period, instead of going 2 weeks w/o pills, go ahead and start your next packet of pills w/o having a period. what i mean is...you're taking one packet of pills and when you get to the off week/placebos, instead of having a period that week, you go ahead and start a new packet of pills. you'll take active pills for a total of 6 weeks, then have a period and when you count it up, your period shouldn't fall in your vacation week anymore. my ob/gyn said this was totally ok to do when i wanted to rearrange my "schedule" for a vacation or holiday. i hope this helps :) it certainly gives ME peace of mind, hehe.

Just an FYI for the future, you can skip a period by skipping the week of placebo pills at the end of the pack and starting a new pack. This is a safer way of changing the timing of your period. Most packs have 3 weeks of hormone pills, followed by 1 week of placebo pills. The placebo pills are usually white, or have been on the various brands of pills I've been on. It's the placebo pills that allow you to have a period. Just skip those and start a new pack of pills and it usually will stop you from having a period. I've done it a couple times for vacations and I might have some light spotting, but not a full period.

It's definitely too early to have symptoms of pregnancy, but there is a chance you are pregnant. BC pills aren't immediately effective so you weren't unprotected for just 10 hours. They work by inhibiting ovulation and thinning the lining of your uterus. That takes time to do. The two weeks you were off them might be enough time to allow an egg to mature for ovulation and allow the lining of your uterus to build up in order to support a fertilized egg. If you ovulated around the time you and DH did the deed, you could indeed be pregnant. :scared1: And ovulation usually takes place mid-cycle, ~2 weeks after the start of your last period. If you read the huge book-like pamphlet of instructions that comes with your pills (fun reading, I know  ), it will tell you to use backup when first starting the pill and if you miss more than 2 pills in a row.

Chances are still remote that you are pregnant, but you might want to pick up a pregnancy test if you next period is at all late.

Thanks everyone, but after reading the last post I'm even a little more worried! Anyone know what complications can occur if I stay on the pill for two more weeks and I am pregnant?

Let's say I did get pregnant last Saturday. That's exactly one week ago. Would a pregnancy test tell me if I'm pregnant yet? I think it might be a little early to do a test.

I'm not completely certain, but I think the main complication with taking the pill after you are pregnant is that it does thin the lining of your uterus and that could cause the fertilized egg to not implant properly and result in a very early miscarriage. But if that's the case, then you might not even realize you were pregnant. And there have been plenty of women that have had completely normal pregnancies after accidentally getting pregnant, not knowing it, and continuing to take the pill.

I think you need about 2 weeks after fertilization for a pregnancy test to pick up the pregnancy hormone and register a positive. I'd wait another week before testing. If that comes back negative, then wait to see if your next period is late. If it is, test again. It's possible for the pregnancy test to register a false negative if it's too early.

My thinking is that you could definitely be pregnant - if you waited 2 weeks to start a new pack, that's right about the time you would have ovulated...uprotected sex....lonely egg just waiting for some company.....you know how it goes. Some women feel crampy when the egg implants, and there could be some spotty bleeding.

I would recommend you call your doctor and see if they'll do a blood test for you - tell them it's possible you're pregnant, and that you're taking pills. They'll probably tell you to stop the pills.

Good luck!

Honestly what I would do is keep up with the pills. They are not going to hurt your baby (if you are pregnant). I know b/c I got prego while taking pills the first time around. I asked my OB and she agreed that the pills I was taking would not harm a fetus.

That being said, keep taking the pills until you get a positive pregnancy test or blood test. A urine test won't be accurate until you are late for a period. A blood test is accurate, I think, up to a week before your period is due. Wait it out and see what happens. You may be worrying for no reason.

You could be pregnant but it is too early to tell.Typically implantation does not occur till about 10 days after conception.Once implantation occurs, your body begins making HCG ( the hormone detected by pregnancy kits). My advice, keep on the pill for a few days then test.there are many woman that have been on the pill and gotten pregnant and still took the pill because they did not know( I am one of them).there is an increased risk of miscarriage on the pill. But at this point you have already been taking them. You may not get a period for awhile and not be pregnant.Skipping a cycle on the pill sometimes throws your body completely off.Especially wit hthe tri-phasic birth control pills( which most are on the market today)As a pp said, next time skip the placebos and start a new pill pack right away, to avoid possible pregnancy.

for a long time, it's unlikely that your body ovulates regularly anymore...making it unlikely you'd get pregnant even after two weeks off the pill.

Just the thought of being pregnant may delay the start of your period.

As a previous poster has mentioned, most women ovulate 10-14 days after the beginning of their periods.

You might get a positive pregnancy test as early as 10 days past that Saturday night, but it's more likely to be longer.

The dollar store has tests now. When I was having kids, the cheapest test was $8 or $10...

I wouldn't go off the pill until you have a positive test...I wouldn't want to increase your chances of a pregnancy before you are ready. and NO the pill cannot impact your test.

Some women do get symptoms before others..but I'm laughing at your husbands wishful thinking:laughing: Hope you and your DH are pleased either way!

(If you've been on the pill) for a long time, it's unlikely that your body ovulates regularly anymore...making it unlikely you'd get pregnant even after two weeks off the pill.

Not necessarily true. When my ex and I were ready to start trying, I talked to my doctor about it because I'd been on the pill for 13 years (on and off, but mostly on). He told me that it could take up to 3 months for me to start ovulating again. I stopped taking the pill at the end of November. I'd always had irregular cycles before going on the pill. I kept waiting for my period to start. December past and no period, but I wasn't surprised because of my history of irregular cycles. Around the second week of January, I still hadn't had my period and I was feeling incredibly tired and had extremely tender breasts. I finally took a test, and yep, I was preggers. :scared1: The ultrasound put the date of conception around December 15th (~ 2 weeks after my last period and the same time I stopped taking the pill). I later read that for many women who've had irregular cycles off the pill, that first month after stopping the pill is their best chance at getting pregnant. I never would have guessed that.

I gave my doctor a hard time about it. I told him when I saw him at the ultrasound, "you said it would take 3 months." His answer was "I said it could, I didn't say it would."

It's possible, even if pretty unlikely.

Call your doctor if you want the safest solution and ask his/her advice :)

It is possible. I was told that when you come off the pill, you are the most fertile. It is too soon to test and I don't think the pill will harm the baby if you are indeed pg.

Aside from what other well intentioned posters have mentioned, your BEST advice is to call your doctor and seek out his/her feedback.

I have heard of other situations where someone forgot to take a pill and ended up pg. It only takes ONE time.

Also keep in mind that the 'lil swimmers can live for several days.....so you might have actually ovulated later and conception could actually occur days after the "event".

I haven't been on the pill in years, but had a pretty good idea of my cycles.....or so I thought. So one nite earlier this year we weren't careful and lo' and behold, I ended up pg. It ended up in a miscarriage (an ectopic at that), but we definitely learned our lesson! (It's all ok now, we really were not ready to be parents again!)

Please call your doctor. They will tell you if you need to stop taking your pills or not. They could do a blood HCG test, as it will trace the most minute amount, or they may just have you wait a little while longer and have you take a home test.

If you're not already taking vitamins, you might want to do that too! So if you really are pg, you will start things off right. :) Please let us know what happens!

The same thing happened to me. I finished my pills and got that period, and then it never came again. I was pregnant right off the hop. Dr's tell you to wait 3 months so that your period becomes regular ( for dating purposes) But for some women the first 3 months they are off the pill are the most fertile, just like some women are more fertile after a miscarriage...

Who knows?? To original poster: I hope it all works out how you want it to!

OP, I have no idea what taking the pills could do to an embryo, but I do know it's possible to have symptoms that early. DH knew I was pg within 2 days, and within a week I was a cup size bigger. 2 weeks later I was TWO cups sizes bigger with big ol' blue veins all over my chest, and with a bionic sense of smell.

Thank you so much for all your responses. I'm definitely a little more nervous after reading them all. It's Memorial day today so my doctor is closed. I'll give him a call tomorrow just to make myself feel better.

I did go out yesterday and start myself on a women's multivitamin.

I'll be sure to update when I know more.

I don't have any advise for you but I hope you get the news you want. I think that I might be pregnant too. I am holding off going to the doc until closer to when my next period is due because I would be bummed if I went and if it was negative. I am in my late 30's never been pregant. This time I felt like I would become pregant shortly after dtd. I started spotting May12 thought my period would start but only spotted for 3 days then it stopped. Dtd on the 14-19th. During May19-22 I had mild cramps (I haven't had cramps since switching to cloth pads about 6 years ago) and lower back pain. On the 21 had brown discharge/spotting. The 22nd the cramp pain increased a little bit. The 23rd I still had back pain and felt like I was starving right atfer eating. The next day I was awaken to a very urgant need to pee afterward was in serious pain for 30-45 minutes. I have felt like my same old self since then. The 2 dollar store test have been negative that I have taken but it is still a little early.
