Couch or sofa?

Sofa and couch interchangeably, but more often sofa. Soda, not pop. Basement, not cellar. Supper, not dinner. Well, now that I think of it, I say dinner now. Must be DH's influence. And ATM, not cash station or TYME machine.

Life sure is confusing...

When I was young we had a "davenport" that somehow evolved into a "couch" by the late 50s. I don't hear "sofa" used around here very much. I think the "ottoman" was always a "hassock" and nobody around these parts ever drank "pop," but "soda" is very popular in the form of "coke," which seems to have become a generic term for any "cola" with "soda" being all-inclusive.

My boyhood "cellar" evolved into a "basement" about the same time as the "couch" thing and both terms are common around here with the latter having a slight edge.

"Dinner" was always "supper," but "dinner" has become more common. As far as I can tell, they both taste the same.

"Caps" have always been "hats" and "ice boxes" survived well into the age of modern "refrigerators."

Kinda makes you wonder how the English language ever survived...

dunno Shannon, but ours is a lounge chair;)

We have a rocker-recliner-sofa. It's perfect for the two of us...:D

We had a sofa in our cellar when we lived in NJ. ;) No cellars here in FL! LOL! Maybe we could try putting one in and go down there to swim. :teeth:

I bet Richard would go for that idea, Sandy.:teeth:

Good points, George. I wonder why we change our words around so often like that? I've always called supper dinner, and it's always confused my mom when I do that. Dinner to her is lunch.

We drink soda on the couch in the cellar. :)

I sleep on my couch alot because my husband snores. What does that make mine?

I call it both, but have been calling it a sofa more often lately. :teeth:

Here in Pittsburgh we drink pop and sit on the couch (pronounced "CAHch", at least if you have the accent ;) )

We are 'Couch potatoes' not 'sofa potatoes';)
And we drink pop - well the kids do. We drink wine;) on our couch. Ps our dog is a couch potato too. When he sits up he slouches to one side:jester: when he lies on the couch he lies on his back grinning his teeth with his legs in the air. PS when he does this we have to sit on the wood floor as he is very big:teeth:

We also drink soda on the couch in the cellar:D
What about car accident or car wreck?

We drink pop on the couch in the basement. When I was young, which was many years ago, several people called a couch a davenport. A cellar was always a place where people stored root vegetables(potatoes, turnips, carrots, etc.). It was typically dirt, not cement.

It's according to which one of us is driving. If my SO is the driver, it's a car wreck.;) If I'm driving it's a car accident.:teeth:

Couch - sofa sounds too formal. Basement - it's only a cellar if there's wine in it :). i drink way too much pop.

Supper and dinner have always been interchangeable to me. Dinners are usually a more formal supper. But to a lot of Minnesotans, especially those from rural areas, "dinner" is actually lunch - as in they have breakfast, dinner and supper each day. That one's just too weird for me.
