Costumes for Disney races

When it comes to Disney, its all about costumes. It's one of the few races where you can really go all out, if you want to.

I just received my Snow White costume I ordered from Amazon. It was under $20 and it got scathing reviews but I ordered it anyway. It actually looks a lot better than I thought for the price. The negative reviews had to do with the length and the sizes run a lot smaller. This is NOT a long gown but a short version of S.W. I am planning on wearing it to the 5k at least. I might even order a Cinderella short dress from the same company, it is a few dollars more though. These dresses run small and considering I will be wearing clothing under it.

I was going to do the tutu thing but I think I want to do the actual costume thing this time around. If at least for the 5k and 10k and possibly even the half marathon. For the full? We will see but I don't imagine myself wearing a Snow White dress for 26.2 miles without ripping it off in the sweltering heat (if the weather is like it was this year).

I can assure you that the weather will be cooler...

Since 99, I have stayed in the OKW resort 3 times; 2005, 2007 and 2013. It just happens that these are the three hottest marathon days since 99. This year I am in the GFV. Of special note, the only time I have been on the monorail was the year better known as DIsney on Ice. I went home with no throw down clothing left in my bag, purchased and threw down 2 Tyvek suits, and brought 12 pair of the pop and warm hand warmers, returning with none. Just thinking out loud here.

On the costume note, you are absolute correct on costumes. The only non-starter with a costume is a face mask. Disney disallows for a safety/security concern, I would think it plain crazy to run with something that would not allow the runner to breath freely and/or keep the head from shedding heat.

I have run with Cruella DeVille and her lost puppies. I remember her looking me in the eye in the staging area and screaming "Are you one of my lost puppies". I also ran with thousands of fairies, mickey, minnie, donald, incredibles, Arial, Tarzan and Spartan. The latter two in mmm, costume. I have also beed with firefighters in full bunker gear. Finally, pizza man and juggle man have run in the race, though they were a much further ahead in the race than I was.

Have fun with costumes! That is a lot of what this race is about. Do follow the age old rule and do not try something new on race day. That means heading out the door and running around home in costume for a few miles. What fits nicely in front of the mirror may be a royal pain on the run.

Even Coach is looking for a tutu for the PHM... If I am running it, I might as well play around with it.

I haven't fully decided on a character yet, but I will try to rig one up out of running-friendly clothing. An easy thing to do would be just to make a no-sew tutu and pick the running top & shorts to match whatever character you'll be. For example, yellow tank, yellow capris, glittery yellow tulle, red rose necklace = instant Belle. Shades of light blue = Cinderella. Bonus is that you can reuse the running clothes for normal wear.

Another idea I have is to wait until after Halloween and buy a princess costume for cheap that I can cut up and attach to regular clothing.

Well I am glad you are not staying at the OKW resort this coming year. That heat was something else. I am traveling from a colder area and by January I am already used to the 20's. Going from that to the 80's and doing a race was hard.
So lets see what weather your new resort will bring!

Yes Disney is all about costume too. Now in truth, I doubt I will run outside in my full blown SW outfit...might try it on the treadmill. I think I am wearing that only for the 5k and or the 10k. We will see for the half though.

A few years ago, after Halloween and before I did my first Disney race (which would be that following Jan) I went to Kmart and they had some adult Halloween costumes at 90% off! I remember seeing a really large Minnie mouse (wearing pink with white dots instead of red)...and I thought how cool it was. I didn't buy it because I had no clue how costume oriented the Disney races were. Had I known that ahead of time, or been signed up to this board at that time, I would have bought the thing. I did regret not buying it.
Last year I went to kmart and they had costumes at 75% off but nothing that I could wear, or would wear. Unless I wanted to dress up as a peanut M&M.

However I will check them out again after Halloween this year. You never know. I believe they are licenced to carry Disney products...and you will only spend a few bucks, then toss it after the race. It's not likely you will keep it and wear it again.

I have been inspired and I've started getting things ready for a running costume. I'm getting all running gear, so it won't look exactly like the costume, but it'll be in the same spirit. A running skirt, running top, and arm sleeves based on the color scheme Disney animated. I do realize the weather could make it all moot, but at least it's all running gear I could use again.

Can't wait to see all the fun costumes you all come up with. I get really hot and honestly it takes all I have to complete the 13.1 miles in my regular clothes let alone adding a costume on to it, so I think I'm going to wear my regular running clothes/skirt but with a Disney flair!
But seriously can't wait to see all the creative costumes for race weekend!

Well if you are doing the 5k race then you will see creativeness. I saw FULL blown gown Cinderella's...and Miss Piggy. Its one of the fun parts of the race.
I did see these two people in huge Donald Duck outfits complete with yellow tights and orange sneakers in the FULL...and it was hot! I saw a girl in a grass skirt hula style outfit...tutu's galore. Its fun. But some of the wild crazy was on the 5k.

When I wear costumes for Disney races I really try to be creative to stand out and I appreciate those people who do the same. Its fun to see the creativity from others and not the same costume worn by everyone. I'm currently working on a few costumes at the moment and the costume I had for Tower of Terror I didn't wear because it was too hot. Have fun and good luck with your costumes.

For Tinkerbell and Princess 10k, I have a butterfly costume that is a rather short length dress with wings. I will have my regular running clothes underneath.

I hear you. My father did the 5k race with us this year and he wanted to wear an original. He does not like the 'boxed' costumes you always see...as that is what they look like, boxed.

For me, I bought costumes that are cheap enough that I would not feel bad if I dumped them. Either on the side of the road during a race or after everything is done. I would have a harder time dumping something that I put a lot of thought and effort into.

I like your father. I would never toss or dump my costumes because I spend way too much time and money on them but I understand what you are saying.

Such a great thread idea! I'm constantly thinking about how I'm going to find/make a 'runable' costume! :thumbsup2

Yeah you do need to plan ahead. I want to do a Minnie mouse thing too..since I am doing the Dopey, I have four costume possibilities...assuming I wear anything for the full.
I would love to have those sparkly MM ears only I am pretty darn sure they would annoy me within the first few miles.

I've only dressed up for a race twice in my running career and both times were at Disney. It's fun just to watch others come up with creative outfits. The year I dressed as Woody from Toy Story is still one of my fondest memories.

I am one of those that never thought I could run in a costume because I would be too uncomfortable. I found a company on etsy, IGlowRunning. I fell in love with the Vanelope outfit. It was $150. Yes I know it is expensive but my aunt bought it for me for Christmas. It came yesterday and I LOVE it!! It is custom made running material. I have the shirt, leggins and skirt. I will definitely be getting another outfit from her for marathon weekend. I am thinking Ariel. Can't wait to wear it for W&D.

I really like etsy. I've purchased parts of costumes or requested custom items from several people on that site to make up costumes for races or other events. I have so many various costumes that family members come over to pick costumes to use for Halloween and other parties.

Can you post a photo of it? Sounds interesting that its a custom made running outfit.
The Cinderella outfit I bought was from Amazon and was NOT designed for anything but fun. It might end up at the side of the road during the race though I intend to wear it for the 10k or 5k.

Here is the link to her shop. My outfit is on page 2. https://www.etsy.com/shop/iGlowRunning?page=1. Tried it on last night. The skirt is about a inch to big but I probably told her the wrong measurements. Besides that it is perfect and can't wait to wear it for W&D :hyper:
