Costco...Day After Christmas?

I agree with most of your points, but the link in post is .com not .ca - and when I follow it, I do get the US website (American flag in upper right corner).

Thanks. I think my chain is just getting yanked.:)

Honestly isn't Christmas EVE more a family day than the day after Christmas? Other than it happening to fall on a Friday this year, I see nothing special about it.

I guess it depends on your family traditons. None of the non-TV people in my family had Christmas Eve off, and it was a normal work day, so any gathering with extended family (Grandparents) always was on Christmas. Christmas Eve was the mad rush to wrap gifts and bake pies for the next day.

That may be a trend though. The past 15 years or so our tradition has been to go out to eat on Christmas eve, and all of the places we have gone to in the past closed at early this year instead. My neighbor is a minister and his tradition is to go out for pie after the 11 pm service, and HE ended up at Denny's this year because his usual spots closed at 6 pm this year.

To be fair, that is the only thing where I thought you were right and someone else was wrong on this thread.

Ok. I didn't realize asking a question and explaining why I had the question could possibly be wrong..

Correct, not a holiday, but for many, a family day. Thus my question given Costco's family friendly business model.

Just what exactly is Costco's family friendly business model that you keep talking about?

The one portrayed by members of this board, going back to posts in November praising Costco for not being open on Thanksgiving.
It is also the business model described in the CNBC closeup on Costco.

And it is also noted by publications like the Huffington Post.

Yes, Costco is a retail company. But Costco is known for doing retail a little differently. And they have a pretty strong reputation for treating their employees well. THOSE were the things that were in my mind when I asked "Is Costco even open......the day after Christmas". Based on the fact that they resisted being open at all on Thanksgiving....which was a HUGE retail sales day, their thinking outside the box retail business plan in general, and their employee friendly policies....it just seemed possible they might be closed today.

How do you make the jump from "treating employees well" to "closed on a non-holiday"? Before you say again about them being closed on Thanksgiving day, hasn't that been a day when retailers in the US have been closed?

It used to be a day that retailers were closed. But in the past few years U.S. retailers have been open at least for a few hours on Thanksgiving. Usually something like 6 pm to Midnight this year. Best Buy here sold more items in that 6 hours on Thanksgiving that they did in the entire day on Black Friday.
Now Best Buy did cut back this year. Last year on Thanksgiving they opened at 6 pm and stayed open until 11 pm Black Friday night. But they did almost no business from Midnight to 8 am, thus the change this year. Costco enters into that picture because they refused to open on Thanksgiving, even though every one of their national store competitors did.

But as many people have pointed out to you, Thanksgiving is a holiday in the US, Boxing Day is not.

Lots of retailers were closed for Thanksgiving including BJs.

Sorry, but your argument is just illogical. Don't you think this thread has been hijacked for long enough?

There is no 'boxing day' in the US. It's just Dec 26 - the day after xmas.

And to get back on topic - did anyone find any deals at Costco today?

Do people flock to Costco for Black Friday specials? I know I never think about Costco when thinking of Black Friday sales (not that I shop Black Friday or I guess now it should be Black Thursday). I just don't think Costco has a reason to open on Thanksgiving.

Costco U.S. is actually closed seven holidays annually, most of which other retailers are open. I'll concede it's due to their family-friendly stance - they close earlier than most other stores every day, too. They're open the other 358-359 normal retail operating days every year.

Many U.S. retailers have opened later in the day on Thanksgiving to compete with each other and internet stores, and in large part because shoppers line up earlier every year.

Yes, I know you don't need to be convinced ;)

Yes, Costco is open the day after, they just don't do a huge clearance sale. If you're looking for bargains there, today is the day as what's left of their Christmas items are marked for clearance. Át our Costco that is mostly just gift baskets. Don't expect to get any deals on returned items either as the majority are returned to the manufacturers and not put on a clearance table. Merry Christmas!

They are closed only on the actual holiday.

Yes, and you will note I never ever ever ever said Boxing day was a holiday. I just asked if they were going to be open today.

No but you keep saying they were closed on a holiday and then asking if they would be closed on a day that isn't a holiday. Your reasoning makes no sense at all.
