Costco...Day After Christmas?

I work in the news department.

Then how on earth can you think it is not worth it for a retailer to be open the day after Christmas or the day after Thanksgiving? Those are two of the biggest shopping days of the whole year, and I am sure that any station worth their salt covers the carnage.

Surely you aren't arguing just for the sake of arguing?

Costco is the 3rd largest retailer in the United States. Today is the 2nd busiest shopping day of the year. It's open and if it weren't, you would have some angry Coscto shareholders (and members).

Ok back on topic.....has anyone ever gotten any good deals the day after Christmas at Costco in the USA? It sounds like mo so far....

No I haven't.
Was in Costco exactly a week before Christmas this year. They had NO Christmas decorations left, 2 smallish cartons of wrapping paper, and a few toys and gift baskets. That's it. Expect by Christmas Eve nothing holiday was left. Recall similar inventory situations in previous years. In general I think they buy to run out before the holiday vs other retailers who only run out if it's an exceptional sales year

To be honest, because people here have said that Costco is very much in tune with it's employees personal lives.

Hobby Lobby is known as a very family friendly retailer, and in fact is closed every Sunday of the year.

They will be open today.

I work in the news department. Yes, the news department is always open. Sales, business office, promotion and production departments are not, they take holidays off. So out of 120 employees, about 40 normally work holidays. Corporate declared Friday a holiday because it wasn't worth coming in for just Friday. We have just a little over 20,000 employees nationwide, so I suspect if staffing rations are the same in other locations, about 2/3 of that 20,000 have tomorrow off, and 1/3 are working.

And how many of the departments you mentioned work on weekends? I'm pretty sure if a business or department has workers normally on Saturday and Sunday, they're going to have workers today.

Therefore, chain retail stores that are open Saturday and Sunday are going to be open today. Yes, businesses that are closed over the weekend could very well be closed today (why open for one day), but that's not the case for Costco.

I don't understand why anyone would think a retail outlet would close on Christmas AND the day after, but be open on Saturday and Sunday.

What I don't understand is this. There is a beauty salon next to where I work. They are closed today (Friday). Will reopen tomorrow (Saturday). But then be closed Sunday & Monday. Why not just close until Tuesday.

I am not. It was an honest question. Costco's entire business plan is to do things differently than any other retailer. When there is a something that might benefit their employees, they often take that option even if it might not be in the best interest of their members. They were closed on Thanksgiving, which turns out was a bigger retail sales day this year for stores that were open that Black Friday was (especially Best Buy). That was the only reason I thought it might even be remotely possible they would be closed today.

Promotion normally has someone on duty on Saturday and Sunday, the rest, NORMALLY would be off weekends. But this is not a normal year.
I will be interested to find out when I get back to work what impact the whole Sony "The Interview" situation will have had on people's holidays. I bet a lot of TV sales people will be working today, tomorrow and Sunday coordinating this last minute buy. Our commercial logs for all 46 stations are now remotely assembled at one location, and sent out one day in advance. Because of the holidays, on Wednesday the commercial logs went out through Monday. I suspect this buy is worth several thousand dollars per station, so I wonder if the traffic people at the hub got called in today, and will be working today, tomorrow and Sunday.

Today is not a holiday
Only a VERY few retailers were open Thanksgiving day (and shame on them)
The daY AFTER Thanksgiving is traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year, as is TODAY.
NO retailer is closed today

The only BIG retailers that go beyond others , are the 2 that close on Sunday-Hobby Lobby & Chick fil-A-and THEY are OPEN today

I respectfully disagree. Almost every major retailer here was open at least part of Christmas. JCPenney, Sears, Walmart, K-mart, Best Buy, Apple Store, Nordstroms, Dillards, Macys, Home Depot, Lowes, Kohls, Target.

Costco was the exception.

I agree with your mind set, but the reality is, as the CEO of Best Buy noted, people are coming out and spending big money on Thanksgiving Day, so stores will continue to be open on Thanksgiving until that changes. Bottom line, the customers want it.

I did Google it, Christmas is the only holiday they list on their website as being a day they are closed. However, as I noted, I had observed them closed other holidays too.

I've often wondered what Costco does with their leftover merchandise since it never goes on sale and they switch merchandise every few weeks sometimes. For example, there might be a platform of knit tops that have been there for a few weeks, and then one day they replace those shirts with jackets. What did they do with all of those shirts?

I used to buy large plastic jars of salted almonds at Costco. They had pallets of them! Two days days later I went there and there were no almonds. I asked an employee and she said they no longer carried them. Where did all of those almonds go?

We have a local store that sells Costco overstock/damaged/returned items. I don't know exactly how it works, but this store has everything from TVs to clothing to food - name brand to Kirkland brand. Some things are only one or two items, but others it's like a whole pallet. I love it

That said, I know the feeling of disappearing merchandise. I've learned that if I like something at Costco, BUY IT NOW. Can always return it later

Costco is closed most Federal and one religious holiday. Costco is open on alm so-called "family" days - which are more commonly known as retail business days in the retail industry. They're surely willing to give the day off to employees who express a needxfor it due to child care obligations, but family days don't exist.

Clearly Thanksgiving was intended here, as none of the retailers mentioned were open yesterday. Those that were open part of the "day" on Thanksgiving opened at 6 PM or later. They did it to compete with each other, but it's never mandatory. These stores are never open in my state at any time Thanksgiving or Christmas - but they're all always open Black Friday and December 26. Hobby Lobby and Chik-Fil-A are open today.

Honestly isn't Christmas EVE more a family day than the day after Christmas? Other than it happening to fall on a Friday this year, I see nothing special about it.
