I seem to remember somewhere that if you were a british costco member then you got automatic entrance to the US ones. Can anyone confirm this for me. Would hate to go in load up and then get refused at the checkout.

Not sure, but have been to a Costco in California a number of times (my husband's Grandma is a member there and she gives us vouchers to spend there as a "guest").
Probably the best thing to do is to go to the "Customer Service" desk just inside the entrance, before you shop, and explain the situation and show your UK card then. They will either tell you to "go ahead" or maybe give you a "guest card" so that you have no problem at the check outs...
You most certainly can use Costco stores in the States. We've been a number of times and purchased many items including the infamous hotdog and coke!!!
I have used my UK card to shop in Costco in both California and Florida. Once or twice they have looked at my card a little strangely but it has always worked no problem.
Costco is a wholesale warehouse that is mainly USA based, they sell everything from food, clothes, toys and misc goods, the US ones also have petrol stations as well.
You can get a coke and a hot dog for about £1.50 in the UK stores and the US ones are even cheaper! To get a card you need to have a business or be a professional.
I would recommend Costco to anyone as they are excellent value and have some really lovely things.
There is a CostCo on South Orange Blossom Trail. If you are coming down from the Florida Mall its about a mile down on the right hand side. Its also a really good place to fill up on petrol.
