Costa Concordia Runs Aground / Deaths Reported

I saw the alert, earlier this evening. They were very proud of that big ship. It's hard to look at it.. It seems unbelievable, that this could happen. The injured decided to jump off. They feared it would plunge, like the Titanic:confused: OMG, were they not, prepared better than that? This is sad, and the losses, probably preventable.

My thoughts and prayers for all who have passed, are injured, and their loved ones.:sad1:

As far as safe drills, what happens when your life boat is on the side of the sinking ship?

I read elsewhere, and hope that it's a true fact, that the lifeboats on just ONE side of the ship are enough to hold the capacity of all on board.

Looking through earlier pictures though, it does appear that the lifeboats on the side that listed were successfully launched before she rolled.

Here are many more pictures by what appears to be a resident in the town where this happened.

So tragic, my prayers are definitely with those families. What a scary and horrible ordeal to have gone through.

These photos are truly amazing and it's hard to fathom how this could happen in this day and age. Thoughts and prayers to those who went through this ordeal and especially to the families that lost loved ones.

Who exactly are you disgusted with? Nowhere in this thread does anyone say they think the emergency drill is unimportant, nor do you speak for anyone besides yourself when you say that someone is not welcome aboard a ship.

The emergency drill is about as important as paying attention to the flight attendent before the plane takes off. In a real emergency, 99% of the people aren't going to remember a darn thing about the emergency drill.

[/QUOTEplease folks.this guy is aTROLL....no one can make a comment like this at a time like...........please don't give him his sick jollies!

Kinda makes all the hatred that flows around here sometimes about wearing shorts, or DCL vs. RCCL vs. Carnival, and puts it in perspective.

Rest in Peace to those that lost their lives. Just terrible, time to go upstairs and kiss my sleeping girls...

Well Said Sir!

This is so very sad. I'm wondering how it could have happened? Don't ships have some sort of radar that tells them what is under the water for quite a distance around them? I also feel badly for the captain of that ship...seems like this was a preventable accident. Boy, am I glad for the first afternoon mustering on DCL. Never will I complain about that again. It's unthinkable that the Concordia wasn't even scheduled to have a drill until the 2nd day of cruising.

As far as safe drills, what happens when your life boat is on the side of the sinking ship?

This type of sinking is a worse case scenario for launching lifeboats from the boat davits. The only way to do it is get the boats in the water before there is any significant list. They also will have available the life rafts that are in the enclosed capsules that can be released quicker than the lifeboats. As others have posted this is why the safety drill is so important.
1. Look at the diagram posted on you stateroom door and note your lifeboat station.
2 Take your life preservers out of the closet and make everyone try them on. Sometimes they don't have the right size or amount you need.
3. Have a family emergency plan, such as a meeting point in case there is a problem.
4.Have your children check in with you periodically so you know their location.(we have our daughters text us with the Wave phones when they are changing their location).
5. And listen at the muster drill, it will make a difference in an emergency.

I read on a news report that the ship had not yet had its lifeboat drill...so confusion about what to do on the part of the passengers is understandable.

Though rare, there are situations when the safety drill is done after the ship has left the docks. This ship left Citavechhia around 7pm and I'd read that the safety drill was scheduled for the next day at 5pm. One passenger had remarked something like 'I hope nothing happens before then'.

So unbelievable ..... and so sad. Thoughts go out to the crew, passengers and families involved. Impossible to believe that this can still happen ... thought that having the water tight compartments below sea level would put a stop to this type of event happening.

My disgust at those on here that do not think the emergency drill is important...... Ughh.

Ex Techie

I thought of your thoughts on the titanic thread as soon as I saw the story. I haven't read all of this thread so I don't know if this has been addressed or not.... but the BBC report is that the muster drill was scheduled for Saturday so passengers did not know what to do in the emergency that occurred on Friday.

I fully agree with you and others that believe the muster drill prior to sailing is very important. I want to know where I'm suppose to go just in case.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the event of an emergency, don't you get "checked off" a list as you get on a lifeboat so the ship knows where you are? If you don't go where you are assigned, could it potentially endanger crew trying to find out where people are otherwise?

In an article on Atlanta Journal Constitution, one passenger said they had not had a muster drill and she had boarded the ship on Jan. 8th. I sure hope that was written in error and not accurate. I can't imagine being on a ship for several days before a muster is held.

I'm glad most were able to get off the ship and thoughts with everyone involved.

According to the news on GMA this morning, the passengers were at dinner and had not yet had the muster drill. They interviewed many people who said there was so much confusion by the crew. The crew didn't seem to know what to do and didn't even think there was an emergency. They said there were never any annoucements during the entire situation. How scary! I just can't imagine.

From what I have seen, the Captain and crew of the Costa must have done a pretty good job (other than hitting the rock). I don't know how far away the accident happened, but the Captain brought the ship in close to shore to make the rescue easier. The engineers appear to have been able to keep the ship powered throughout the rescue operations, I can imagine it would ave been even more frightening for the passengers if this happened in the dark. The images from Facebook and the Beeb indicate that all but three or so lifeboats were deployed, so I would say the crew actually performed very well and even the passengers should be commended since they hadn't had their muster drill.

I pray for the families of those lost and that the count stays at three.

I too thought the "you are not welcome" comment was rude, out of line and serves no value. If people don't think the drill is important it is because they feel (overly) safe on the ship. That does not make the "unwelcome" as that posted stated.

It appears the emergency drill would have sent 1/2 the ship into the drink had they reported to their muster stations per the drill instructions.

The one benefit of the drill is familiarization with the life vests. But for me, that is the equivelent of the flight attendant demonstrating how to operate a seat belt.

Edited after looking at more photo: It looks like there was time to get on the lifeboats. Presumably everyone on the listing side of the ship would have been told to go to the other side immediatly and start boarding lifeboats.

This is so sad ! On our last Med in august 2011 she was next to the magic in Palermo...Oh boy !

I cannot even imagine the terror that those passengers felt.

That's a huge rock stuck in the hull... how the heck does that happen???

This kind of tragic event might serve as a reminder to us all...

Have an emergency plan at home. Make sure your children know how to get themselves out of the house and know where to meet up with you.

Everyone over the age of 10 should learn CPR. Hey folks, it's not that bad anymore...no more mouth to mouth and all that yucky stuff. If you and your family don't know CPR please call you local Fire Department. They will be happy to tell you where and when the next classes are...probably for free.

Pay attention to the pre-flight briefing by flight attendants. It only lasts about 90 seconds, I'm sure you can put down the newspaper for that long. Do you know for sure where the closest emergency exit is? Did the airline change the type of plane on you, so it's not where you expect it to be?

Time and again, well designed studies have shown clearly that preparing for emergencies saves lives. But you actually have to participate people.
