Has anyone had to do this recently? How much did it cost you to have plumber come out and replace your Hot Water heater?

My DH replaced my GF's hot water heater. It is not that hard. She and I went to by it. IIRC the cost was about $350. The actual cost would depend on the size of the tank. IIRC hers was 50 gallons. There were larger and smaller ones.

The plumber estimates were closer to $500 for just labor. This is an electric hot water heater. If it was gas DH would not have done the work.

The quotes I got were around $1100 for the heater and installation. You can find them for $450 and up but the installation is around $500-$600 from a lic plumber so it was about the same either way.

Mine was $800 something last fall. It was gas and was professionally installed. We have some weird code thing in my county and I needed a special pressure relieving tank-thingy that ran the cost up by about $100. Costs can vary depending on your local codes. Your best bet is to call around and get estimates. This is one of these homeowner's fixes that just sucks all-around. Mine was spewing water out of the top one morning.

It's really, really, really easy to do it yourself. If you have a husband (son, other man...) who is even a little handy and strong, you can change one out alone.

Mine is running about $1300 but includes new water lines (old ones were undersized) and strapping for Earthquake safety. It just seems so expensive, when the hot water heater itself is less than $300 (according to homedepot.com).

Unfortunetly it is a Sunday and it had to done ASAP! as it was leaking water, the shut off wasn't shutting the water off all the way and the main water had to be shut off.

And to make it even worse is that it looks like we may have to have the floor repaired/replaced too.

We have replace both of ours over the last couple of years.

They were about $350 each.....DH and friend installed them.

We just had to replace ours in April and it cost $939 - Not what I was expecting and as always came at a terrible time. That included the new tank, installation, $30 for the permit (city requires them) and then an extra $100ish to replace something (can't remember what it was called).

Wow. I was complaining about the cost until I read this thread. Our hot water heater died about 3 months ago. We had a plumber come out and replace it. Total cost was $500 for labor and a 50 gallon tank. It would have cost $750 for an installed 80 gallon tank. This is electric.
